Does anyone know how to remove the optics rail on a Zastava zpapm70? I've searched online and on youtube for a video but haven't been able to find one. Mine is rusting so I need to remove it, clean off the rust and oil it. I'm much more familiar with an AR platform as opposed to AK.

The rail on the side of the receiver is usually riveted on...

That's what it looks like to me, there doesn't seem to be any way to remove it. There's definitely rust underneath it though. Not sure how to clean it other than to drop some oil between the small gap between the rail and receiver.

If you’re able to refinish it, you can soak it in evaporust. But it will take away rust based finishes, like blueing. A parkerized finish may be at risk, but some say no.

Drilling out the rivets is the only way.
It's a simple endeavor on pop rivets but more of a big deal on hardened steel assembly rivets. I'd use a drill press or a super steady hand and of course a bit that is the diameter of the rivet shaft, or slightly less, so you don't damage or enlarge the existing holes. |

There’s no “easy” way to remove a side rail. The rivets holding it on the receiver are structural elements.
