| I am JUST about to purchase an Intrac Maadi ARM import (as stamped on the receiver, anyway), and I just noticed that it has a hooded front sight. I thought only Chinese barrels had this (consistent with the Misr-90 which I DO NOT want)... Any ideas? Were any Maadi's factory produced with hooded front sights??? |
| Sounds like a MISR. As far as I know Maadi didn't produce any hooded front sights and there's really no way for the Chinese FSB to fit a Maadi barrel without sleeving it. Do you have pics? |

Very odd. It has a Mak-90 stock with what looks like a Mak-90 barrel, gas block, and FSB. But it doesn't look like it has the Chinese barrel trunnion rivet pattern but instead the correct standard AKM pattern. Also that definitely has a Chinese top cover, selector, and bolt carrier. |

How can you tell it's a Mak-90 stock rather than an Egyptian thumbhole stock? Maadi stocks have a thinner pistol grip area with a metal buttplate as opposed to the rubber one found on Mak-90's. I just cracked open "The Grim Reaper" reference book and it shows a model exactly like you're showing and it's still considered a MISR/90. ETA:

Looks like what you have there is one of the earlier MISR's where they used older Egyptian receivers that also came with Egyptian trunnions. Here what "The Grim Reaper" says about it: The Egyptian Maadi's barrel trunnion being a standard pattern AKM rifle, is designed to accommodate a barrel with a 23mm outside diameter breech. To accommodate the smaller diameter Chinese barrel into the larger diameter Maadi barrel trunnion a steel sleeve adapter was used to mate the Chinese barrel to the Maadi trunnion. To alleviate further problems on later builds Century Arms began to import the Maadi receivers without the 23mm barrel trunnion installed.

| Honestly, with the influx of Egyptians kits you could press out the current barrel and sleeve and install a proper one (using a virgin Romy with Egyptian parts). You could also remove all of the other Chinese parts and replace them with correct Egyptian components. Then you would have a "correct" looking AK. But this all depends on the initial cost of the weapon and/or your skill level with AK's. |

It sounds like I will have to pick up my own copy of The Grim Reaper. And thanks, you've been a ton of help. I think for the $600 he's asking for on this gun, it would be high, all things considered.
Any idea where the best place would be to pick up a genuine Maadi ARM? I would even be willing to shell out the $2000 for a Steyr preban. |

Your Rifle a Chinese hybrid MISR-90:
The model MISR-90 rifles were assembled by Century Arms from Maadi receivers and Chinese MAK-90 parts kits. They bought 1000's of MAK-90 rifles that were disassembled and had the receivers distroyed after the import of Chinese guns and ammo was banned in April,1994. They imported Maadi receivers that had both trunions,rails,trigger guard,and mag catch installed. The first ones due to the Maadi receivers having a AKM front trunion that has a opening for a barrel with a 23mm barrel shank required a sleeve to be added to the smaller 19mm barrel shank of the MAK-90 parts kit barrel. The later assembled MISR-90 rifles used the Chinese front trunion from the MAK-90 parts kits and a Maadi receiver imported without a front trunion installed. Besides the rivets being loacated in different places on the trunion/receiver the early MISR-90 rifles have the model stamped on the left side of the reciever where the later rifles have it stamped on the barrel. When the treasury dept. banned the import of Chinese guns and ammo in April,1994 there were 1000's of MAK-90 rifles in bonded warehouses awaiting import approval from customs and 1000's more in transit to the US. The importers filed with the treasury dept. to release the rifles that were in customs as they were in the US when the ban was enacted. The treasury dept. ruled that the rifles while physically in the US they were not legally in the US as customs had not released them. But they did allow the rifles to be released from cutsoms to be sold as parts kits if the receivers were destroyed. |

The Grim Reaper book goes for over 200 bucks.....sometimes find a used one on amazon for 180-90ish. If you really want a nice Maadi check here from time to time. http://www.theakforum.net/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=26 Usually 1-2 for sale every month or so. If you really want one its worth waiting for and I wouldn't advise buying anything off of gunbroker. Unless you absolutely have to have it and have silly amounts of money. Also, buying off a private seller on a board you will have feedback, reputation and post count to go off of. A Nice one just sold last week...he wanted $775 for it or trade for a new saiga. I would have bought If I had the cash.....he has pictures of it here on arfcom to in this section from a month ago or so. And since this is the Egyptian section on arfcom the pictures are prob only a few posts down.... Pictures have a plaid blanket as background......really nice rifle, wish I had had the cash but my play money is wrapped up in kits atm.
