AK Underfolder to Side Folder Conversion Adapter - AKMS (Page 1 of 2)

People used to ask us about how to convert an underfolder AK to accept our stocks. My standard answer was that it it was too hard and expensive, so the best thing would be to sell the underfolder and buy a side-folder. I then found that there are quite a few registered NFA underfolder AKs, both full auto and SBRs. They can't be easily replaced. When the idea was explored, it turned out that there are a lot of underfolders used by foreign militaries who would just as soon find an inexpensive way to convert them all to side-folders. We are now introducing the AKMS Underfolder to Side-Folder Adapter for stamped-reciever underfolder AK rifles. The adapter installs easily in place of the existing stock hinge. It is a modular system that is compatible with our UAS style stocks and our collapsible stock systems, including the recoil-reducing stock system. Here it is with the recoil-reducing folding stock system and the GK-MAG Buttstock, mounted on a Yugo underfolder AK.    Shown on the same rifle with a UAS stock (old style UAS).   |

Reasons for converting an underfolder to a side folder: • Underfolders have notoriously poor cheek welds, resulting in a rifle that is more difficult and uncomfortable to shoot well. • Side-folders often can be deployed more quickly and easily than under folders. • Underfolders tend to prevent the use of most aftermarket handguards.

Installing an underfolder trunnion on a non-underfolder receiver would take some work to the receiver. It is quite different. it might be easier to just replace a receiver with an underfolder receiver. Top folder would be interesting, but there are issues with it that would have to be resolved, like charging handle clearance, and I don't know that we are the ones to get involved with something like that, since it would be more of a novelty than anything, and there are manufacturers better suited to those type of products.
