Tony,

So I finally received the FOIA documents the other week and wanted to provide you with more information on my Colt M16A1 (SN 9310894): It looks like its birth was December 20th, 1997 and it was originally made with a 20" barrel.

Just purchased an transferable  M16A2 burst roll stamped rifle, dark gray, sn#8006xxx everything is standard A2, except the lower receiver is in A1 configuration forging, this is an un-molested original rifle NIB or ANIB.

Was it common for Colt to roll stamp a non reinforced lower with M16A2,

I have seen earlier serial numbered 8 mil series rifles with regular reinforced A2 receivers and black finish, so were guns manufactured out of serial number order, as my gun is quite late in the transferable pre may 86 range with an A1 style lower and gray color, yet earlier ones were black with A2 style lowers

Was Colt really that unconcerned with what receiver forging they used and does the non reinforced (but still M16A2 marked) lower alter the rifles value significantly.

I just had my hands on a "US Government Property" M16 with the serial 320XXX.
No prefix letters or anything. No forward assist. Black triangle handgards. Bird cage flash hider.
It's an old Military rifle.

Any idea of it's age?

I have a Colt factory rollmarked M16A1. Purchased in original A1 configuration, 20" barrel, triangular handguards, tear-drop forward assist. Rebuilt in a more modern configuration, but all internals stay factory Colt. Run a few different uppers on it, but maintain all the original parts. Serial # is 9256XXX. I know it was in a VA police dept it's entire life and I believe it was manufactured around 74-75 timeframe. No additional engraving or markings from dept, selector marked safe-semi-auto. Hope that helps the database Tony. If you stumble across any info regarding this firearm please pass it on. One more thing, it was purchased from Ruben Mendiola, whom I highly recommend.

All:

Just purchased from Ruben an M16A1 factory carbine. Called Colt to try and track down the date of manufacture, and any other information Colt might have on the firearm. It is serial number 92846XX, but the Colt representative's understanding was that there should be a two-letter prefix, which does not appear in any of the photos we have looked at so far. Any assistance from the forum as to this serial number M16 would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

I guess I can contribute.  I know nothing really about my M16.  Maybe someone can shed some light on it, because I've never seen another upper like this before (though my searching has been somewhat limited).

Marked Colt M16
SN:  5096XXX

I bought it used, so it has been fired by the previous owner, and since I got it, I took most of the factory parts off and safely stored them.  It now has a different Colt LPK in it and a different stock, upper, etc.

Anyone have any idea what the deal with this one is?  I suppose I could take the hand guards off the upper and check out the profile if that would help.

I have another one to add. Colt US Property Marked M16A1. 20 inch barrel with tear drop forward assist. No brass deflector. Bird cage flash hider and full lower ribbing. Serial number 534XXXX. NOT a reweld. Still has the DOD acceptance stamp (that I managed to wipe some off damn it!). My guess is a former DOE gun that got moved to the private market. Last owner had it since 91 I think. The receiver is engraved with rack number 56. There was an old thread about these guns.

Hello guys,
I live in the Czech Republic and I am the owner of the M16A1. With great interest I read this discussion and I would like to add a to database on my gun. Laws in the Czech Republic allow only hold a gun shooting in mode Semi. Therefore, the mode is  Auto blocked.I would love to learn more about this great weapon, and therefore I would like to ask for help. The weapon was never operated and is completely new. In particular, I am interested in the year of manufacture and whether it is in original condition or has undergone any alteration. If it is in a state as when leaving the factory Colt.
The gun is marked:
COLT
M16A1
CAL. 5.56 MM.
9532817

Pictures:

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello,
Thanks for the answer. I'm sorry, but I have not figured out how to upload photos. These weapons I've never seen the shelves of our stores. There were weapons of modern manufacturers - Dlask, Proarm Armory, Norinco ap., But not Colt M16A1. I think it was a very limited supply of new weapons. I wanted to know the origin of these weapons, but I did not find the exact information. One theory is that it could be on unused weapons of war in Yugoslavia. I saw 5 pieces and they were all new never used. All serial numbers of the rifles began 95XXXXX. I do know that the serial number 9538406 is also in the Czech Republic. Selling price of these weapons is approx. 3000-USD.
I will try again to insert photos.
Best regards
Barnii

Anyone heard of a US Property marked 9 million serial gun? There is one mention of one in the thread but doubt exists. My understanding is that they are commercial guns.

The 9-mil SN range was dedicated to LE and export sales. As such, some of the LE M16s were indeed diverted to private owners by distributors and dealers (though Colt would sever sales to any FFL caught doing so).

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if a few 9-mil series receivers were used to fill out a military contract here and there. Colt was always doing stuff like that.

However, in all my years researching the 9-mil series, I've never seen a verified "US PROP" example.

I have, however, seen some 9-mil guns on which the civilian owner later had property markings engraved. I guess, because they wanted one like they carried in 'Nam or whatever. Before 1986, these were $700 guns, so owners did all sorts of odd things to them. The remarked guns are pretty easy to spot.

HTH.

Hey now, only I am allowed to engage in semantics between commercial and LE/export specificity.

Seriously though, I appreciate your explicitness. I was aware Colt didn't sell them to the general civilian market but I always referred to LE/export guns as 'commercial' as it wasn't military contract. I won't make that mistake again.

My US Prop A1 serial number range is 5 million as a DOE gun. The store I work for now says they had a 9 million US Prop though I never laid eyes on it.

I posed the question because someone on Sturm has a claimed 9 million gun that is marked a government gun for sale. I asked for pictures but none have appeared. Of course, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist but given the rash of fraud on Sturm right now makes me doubt it is real.

All the Colt M16s that start with an AL serial number were contract guns made for the Lebanese Army. I don't know the dates. I have the magwell from one of them. Around 14,000 were made with the AL serial numbers.
