This is the Romak II barrel. I didn't even scratch the barrel, unlike the SAR-2 I was also working on. The two cross cuts are the original holes for the factory .118 dowel pins.

The Romak II (but not the SAR-2), comes with a compensator catch pin and spring. Tap out this dowel pin, remove the comp pin, spring, and dowel pin, and set aside.

This is the spring, compensator catch pin, and .118 hardened dowel pin that were installed on the Romak. They are not installed on the SAR-2, and you'll have to order them (about $7.00), if you want to attach them on your SAR. On the other hand, you could make your own for about a buck. Here's the dimensions: comp catch pin: .154x.542 uncompressed spring: .140x.440. I reused the .118 pin, but you could drill out the hole and use a .125 pin like the ones you'll use on the base (20 cents each).

[Hbarski commented on the pin sizes: "...the holes for the site post retaining pins are not drilled through and are slightly oversized from the Romanian .118" to .1245...]

[Campybob answered the question on the pin sizes: "Q... What are the diameters of the original pins? The reason I ask, is it seems that .125 pins are fairly large for the job. Is this to take account for relocating or catching the original grooves made in the barrel. A. The original pins are .118" (3mm). the .007" increase insures a positive displacement of metal in the bbl. grooves. This is necessary unless you locate the new holes to the old grooves...]

Using the AK sight adjustment tool, unscrew the front sight from the old sight base. I've removed the "C" portion of the tool, and it is sitting in the background.

Install the sight on the new sight base. You can also install the comp catch pin and spring through the rear hole, and tap in the dowel pin at this time.
