I'm putting together a charity clays shoot in a few months and looking to add a bit of spice to it to raise some extra funds for the cause and give people something to be interested in and remember. In addition to the sporting clays as usual I was thinking of putting in some kind of safe but interesting trick shot for people to attempt, the idea being like a designated hole at a golf course having a car if someone got a hole in one on it. Has this ever been done at an event you've been to? I was thinking of something like having a straight away shot directly at the backstop so it's 100% fool proof with 2 or 3 traps throwing 5, 6, or maybe even 7 birds simultaneously and a semi auto with an appropriate capacity tube for them to attempt to get all 5, 6, or 7 birds at the same time, ala Tom Knapp. Difficult but remotely possible, safe enough to try, and enticing for someone to want to pay $5 a try.

How about this:  put a shot proof screen up that obscures a good part of the lane which has a hole in it a bit smaller than the clay bird.  The bird is then launched so that it flies and then dissapears behind the screen and travels to appear in the hole for a brief moment.  The shooter has to break the bird by shooting it through the hole.

you could also try something involving a reload. maybe a report or true  pair, reload, then hit a bird flying directly away from you. hit all 3.

Why not just throw a SUPER long distance batue that turns on edge rather quickly.

60 yards out or so oughta do the trick. Gotta shoot it fast with a tight choke and high vel. 7 1/2's.

What is your goal for this? Just generating extra funds from fun games? Or are you trying to use this to draw extra shooters to the main event?

For simply a fun game, you will probably get the best results from some type of 5-stand, flurry, or double wobble trap. Something fun, fast paced and informal. Do 24-25 rounds for $10. Most people will shoot this several times during the day. A difficult or "gimmick" game will only be shot once or twice by shooters, so you won't gain a lot of revenue unless there is some type of prize for winning it. A 50 ft cherry picker or other tower with a trap on top makes a good "longbird" game that will be very challenging for most shooters.

If you're using this as a gimmick to get people to your main event, try to give away a decent prize to anyone who completes it. You could also offer something huge, like $10,000 cash, to anyone who can complete the challenge. There are several insurance companies who will cover these contests. You pay a modest premium, and if anyone wins the money, the insurance company pays it out. My family runs several sporting clays shoots during the year, and we have used promos like this in the past with a lot of success.

What if you hang a bunch of clays on a net of some sort and let the shooter shoot a single slug for, say, $5.  Most of the clays will have nothing behind them, but some would have some sort of prize card/color/whatever hidden behind them.  You can hit up local gun stores and other businesses for cheap prizes (e.g. $10 Gift Certificate), or buy cheap prizes from ticket sales.





If it doesn't have to be a clay, you could also do a prize shoot with helium balloons.  This seems a lot more practical to me.  Stick a piece of paper in each balloon, some of which are "duds" and others that have a prize written on them.  Just weight the balloons down or tie them to stakes or something and distribute them throughout a field.  Slugs or handgun/rifle only, $5.00-$10.00 per shot, and the shooter gets to keep any prizes from any balloons they pop.





A local charity does the balloon thing, minus the guns, and always draws a big crowd.  They usually have one big prize (e.g. a car or motorcycle), and the rest of the prizes constitute small items like gift certificates and small items.  Any gun/hunting related stuff would be a great idea (e.g. ammo, holsters, etc).

A slug would decimate anything behind a clay or balloon. Not to mention, most folks at a big posrting event are NOT going to put a slug through their K/P gun.
