WASHINGTON — Rep. Lee Zeldin announced Thursday that he is running for governor of New York in 2022, becoming the first high-profile Republican to launch a challenge to embattled New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Zeldin, 41, who has represented eastern Long Island since 2015, shared his decision on Fox News and posted it on Twitter, saying that to save his state, “#CuomosGottaGo!”

“I'll bring the kind of relentless, fighting spirit towards helping to save our state that Cuomo reserves for multi-million dollar self-congratulatory book deals, cover-ups, abuse & self-dealing,” Zeldin tweeted.

“With 1-party Dem rule in NYC & Albany, the light that was a beacon of what America can be has gone dark,” continued Zeldin, who said that Cuomo is “at the helm of NY’s downfall.”

Just substituting one shit bag for another or this guy going to change something/anything for the better?

He is one of only two Republican's left from the Long Island congressional delegation. He hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell of winning the governorship and if he chooses to forgo running for Congress simultaneously, I suspect his seat will probably flip to the Democrat's.

A Republican has to be pretty delusional to think they have a chance at winning statewide office in New York these days. If NYC does not support you, you really do not stand a chance.

Just what we need. Another Downstate politician. Not

The "native" east end population  (those who are from there and live there year round) are still relatively Republican and the area (Eastern Suffolk) tends to light up RED on election maps. The non-resident population that spends summers out there in the Hamptons is deep blue but usually do not vote out there as they are typically NYC residents who fly in on helicopters to East Hampton airport on Friday afternoons. Big problem though is that many did move their residency out there during COVID and unless they move back to NYC, they will skew forthcoming elections. If Zeldin does not run for Congress in 2022, there is a chance his seat could flip. He won in 2020 54.8% to Ms. Goroff with 45.1%. If she or another challenger mount an earlier campaign, that could flip.

But as noted, he has no chance of being Governor because NYC voters will not support him.

Zeldin is a good guy, solid guns supporter, member of my FOP lodge. Straight shooter who has voiced his opposition to 99% of the crap that cuomo has done with covid, along with what congress has done to cripple the economy.

But as mentioned, NYC will outvote the rest of the state, every time... Any R candidate has to, at a minimum, pull at least 30% of the overall NYC vote, and hope for a good turnout in the upstate counties, in order to win the governors office.
