@fp1201

I have to agree with you there. I read and posted in a bit of GD when I first joined the site last year but now I look at the hometown forum mostly. For some reason many in the general discussion forum just love to talk negatively about everyone.
Someone posted a video there about gun rights and about some of the gun control bills being discussed and half the thread was people angry about the person's speech patterns, mannerisms, how they looked, etc. . I can't remember exactly how long ago it was but the video was actually informative but half the thread was nothing but complaints. It's like people just go there to vent.

A big thank you to everyone who's been posting updates about gun control and other stuff in the hometown forum. It's great to read a thread where the issue in question can actually be discussed without multiple page long arguments between members and pointless complaints.

I often surprised at the users in other Forums with NY locations that never appear in the NYHT Forum....over almost 20 years I've had the pleasure of meeting a good many, and found them all to be good people!

The hometown, industry specific, and other sub-forums on here are actually really well managed. Even as bad as GD can get it's still miles ahead of a lot of the off topic boards on other websites.

I do get it about GD, didn't even look there for years. Started checking it last last and granted 90% of it I pass right by but there are a few good threads there. Doesn't take long to recognise which is which.

Let them try it!  We will see in a very short period of time the quiet citizens who stood idly by will be demanding protection from criminals!  People that have no respect for law-enforcement will disrespect a counselor even worse!

I have been here for a Long time, and I very rarely touch GD!
Actually considering my entire existence here due to Google tracking found here!

Its been mentioned here before, but I think that one factor in the lack of posting is that the NYHTF is mainly full of sad news about gun control and not a whole lot else.

Once in awhile we talk about fishing and hunting and camping.

Having said that, striped bass season on the Hudson is coming up...

After meeting with all sorts of minority special interest groups on this issue ( example),https://www.ithaca.com/news/ithaca/county-city-leaders-meet-with-community-members-for-police-reform-q-a/article_6a65a004-8dcf-11eb-ab3b-9f19e1501c91.html

the county administrator and the new "diversity coordinator" finally met with us on Zoom yesterday.
It was largely the smoke show I expected.
I was trying to control myself the whole time by consuming a large number of tootsie rolls that happened to be laying around, until I couldn't stand it any longer and had to say something

They admitted that the focus groups they were mainly listening to were minority groups who they claim are unheard or "marginalized" groups within society
I pointed out that there are no marginalized groups, that everyone has an equal ability to contact their respective politicians at local, county , state and federal levels. I was told that was a personal viewpoint

They started in about how the minority community is in fear of the SWAT truck used by the swat team; its not an up-armored vehicle, its just a command post on wheels that stores gear.

They talked about how minorities get stopped excessively and black parents have to give "the talk" to their kids about police stops. I said that my parents and the parents of every white officer in the conference gave us the same talk. I pointed out that in the vast majority of stops, we don't know the race of sex of the driver until we're standing by the drivers door. They tried to claim that there are studies out there that say otherwise.

By the time they started talking about "systemic racism" I figured it was a lost cause.

They haven't surveyed the vast majority of residents on this "reimagining" thing. At some point it came out that they've talked to at max, maybe a couple hundred " marginalized" people, and the effort is driven by a minority mayor and county administrator who want to make names for themselves on a national level so they can move up the political ladder...leaving the city and county behind them in a state of ruin due to their policies.

The taxpayers the politicians SHOULD be listening to come up to us on a daily basis talking about how they don't support this effort one bit.
They actually held a rally in support of local police, and of course the haters turned out to counter-protest, and THEY got the headline:

I was in your neck of the woods yesterday.....all I can say is it was interesting all the looks I received as I expressed my Petro-masculinity driving my dead dinosaur burning diesel towing horse trailer through Ithaca to CU

If my kids were grown up I’d be out of this state in seconds.

On that I agree as well as a lot of scenery. My firm used to have an office in the valley south of San Jose. Beautiful area. If not for the fact it was California with all it BS, I could seriously have considered living there. But moving from New York to Kali would have been no net gain and probably even worse in the long run.

Harbinger of things to come. Ithaca could save this country!

The permissive leftists now have continuity in violent crime.  Some will leave. Tax roll drops.

Cornell attendance drops because parents won’t send kids to such a violent area.  Rent drops.  Teachers aren’t replaced.  Property values decrease.  Taxes paid decrease.

Then maybe somebody will say “hey this was all a stupid experiment!” And saves the country from following the same path.

Not a chance After all, the Democrat Socialists keep claiming that socialism will work here if we just give it a chance. Cuba, China, North Korea, USSR, former East Bloc countries, etc. They just did not do it right. We will be different I would laugh but seeing where we are headed with the blessing of the "woke generation", I do not laugh any more. I take it very seriously.

So no, an "Ithica Experiment" would still be explained off as "they did not do it right".

Ithaca College enrollment has already dropped off, resulting in staff cuts that made national news
The local community college is suffering from such low enrollment that the school is accepting Downstate minorities who attend on a free ride and their grades show it
I'm not sure how bad Cornell is. Being an Ivy gives them a certain buffer, but they've been hurting for the past decade

I am sure Cornell will survive in some capacity. They must have a pretty good endowment which they could tap if needed. My late grandmother, grandmothers cousin and an uncle all went there.

Well, we could talk about the employment outlook, economy, road salt and cars, crumbling infrastructure, national quality of life rankings, flight of the taxpaying population,  or government corruption.

From the NY Post today....
https://nypost.com/2021/03/29/nyc-cop-killer-now-helping-to-reform-the-police/

He fatally shot an NYPD cop execution-style decades ago in a Queens bar — and now Richard Rivera is helping reform police in upstate New York as part of a state-mandated plan launched by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The cop-killer — who murdered off-duty officer and dad-of-four Robert Walsh in 1981 — sits on a panel for Ithaca and Tompkins County as part of its “Reimagining Public Safety Collaborative.’

Apparently having some personal experience in killing police officers gives you some credibility with the hippies in deciding how policing in general should be reformed.

I'm semi-retired
I work a couple days a week spend most of my time doing the FFL thing and hiking
The plan is to continue part time for a few more years of fully retire, hit a long trail or two and make a move
By then I'll qualify for early social security and I'll be drawing my military pension
Yeah NYS is on the shoals

Off topic but is anyone else surprised that there's a lot of people that don't understand the Sullivan Act or the pistol permit system? It's been around for over 100 years and many gun, concealed carry, hunting, or other shooting websites have warnings or giant write ups about not bringing handguns to New York but some people still don't understand it. I've seen some pretty horrendous advice on other websites were people assume it's a simple ticket at worst or just a small fine even after being told how much legal trouble they could get in by people who lived here or those who are familiar with the law.

I'm 100% against the Sullivan Act to put it mildly, just surprised by the lack of knowledge some people have about it despite the easily searchable websites listing New York state gun laws.

I knew a girl in FL who was in an abusive relationship & left the guy. Her brother a cop, gave her a pistol for protection. She put in her bag & forgot about it. Packed her bags & jumped on a plane... Got all the way to Buffalo before airport security found it(this was in mid 90s). In the end, w/ her brother explaining he gave her the gun(& why) & my uncle at the time was an assembly man, put in a good word for her. She was ticketed & released.  Probably a good thing she didny fly into the city(JFK/Laguardia).
