I'm going to be staying on the US side for one night next week.

Where do I need to avoid since I'll be unarmed?

I'd like to stay close to Niagara Falls but if a better area is 30 minutes away that's fine too.

Thanks.

I was told it's cheaper to stay on the US side. Less taxes / fees.

Is that not correct?

If you are military or retired military might want to contact the inn on the Niagara Falls Air Force base.
I would say there is not enough price difference to matter us/Canadian side for hotel.

I suggest the Raddison on Grand Island. Beautiful waterfront, safe as can be and about 10 minutes from downtown Niagara Falls.

I have stayed pretty damn cheap on the Canadian side.  Last time we were at the HoJo which is fairly newly remodeled and dinner for two cost less than the jacuzzi suite.  It isn't falls view though.  Gotta shop around a bit.  If you do stay on the us side there are a few decent hotels in that area.  The casino probably isn't to bad either although I have never been in the rooms.  I second Grand Island, where you are further from the bad sections yet a short drive to the falls.

If you stay away from the tourist area and venture further, the Canadian side is affordable.

Yes, somewhat, cos Canada has all sorts of taxes tacked onto everything including hotel rooms. But if you do stay or visit there, use your credit card for the best exchange aside from what the casino rate is.

Depends on the credit card. About ten years ago most started charging a finance charge of between 2% and 3% on top of the conversion fee which always existed. I was visiting family in Canada and got burned by that as the card I was using had a minimum finance charge of a dollar so little transactions added up quickly. I wound up getting a Capital One card which is the only major card that does not have that fee. DiscoverCard does not charge the fee either but other than major hotel chains it is hard to find places that take it in Canada.

I would give to Canada any day over this asshat state.. This state needs to go the way of Detroit. When it does they need to hang all the elected officials.
