I bought my son a  Ruger 10/22 tactical last year for his 15th Birthday.  He is now 16.

It has an evil Thumbhole stock and a muzzle break...so it an assault rifle as per NY Safe Act

Now the big question....it's his gun....see where I'm going with this...He even bought 2 extra evil 10 round

Magazines this summer at Cabela's in Hamburg PA....with his grass cutting money.

Can a 16 year old register a Assault rifle?

It was just a cool looking .22 last week.....This week it's evil.

Just a Ruger 10-22.....same gun my dad bought and taught me with when I was 15.

Just trying to show how silly this law is.....

Interesting question.

If you are not allowed to transfer the weapon or leave it to your kin, perhaps an older fellow could just have their 5 year old son (or even unborn fetus) register it in their name.

We really won't know until 4/15

That's what I was thinking.....if I registered it under my name and I die....Estate could not transfer the rifle to him.

Sad....silly laws....

Sad to see only the law abiding citizens trying to figure this all out....Bad guy's don't care.

I don't think the mentally ill  or NY Thugs are trying to figure out how to stay legal......They did not care about the prior law's or the new

2013 Safe act.

I thought you had to be 18 to even own a rifle in NYS? Am I wrong?

Interesting.   Along the lines of the NFA items.  Can a trust register the NY AW's and the trust keep them in perpetuity with successive trust executives.

I'm just thinking out loud and I'm no lawyer and certainly no NFA user.

Unless something has changed recently (NYS website is down) it's currently 16 to possess a rifle/shotgun unsupervised at an indoor/outdoor range or while legally hunting in NYS.

NY PL 265.20

7. Possession, at an indoor or outdoor shooting range for the  purpose

of  loading  and  firing, of a rifle or shotgun, the propelling force of

which is gunpowder by a person under sixteen years of age but not  under

twelve, under the immediate supervision, guidance and instruction of (a)

a  duly commissioned officer of the United States army, navy, air force,

marine corps or coast guard, or of the national guard of  the  state  of

New York; or (b) a duly qualified adult citizen of the United States who

has  been  granted a certificate as an instructor in small arms practice

issued by the United States army, navy, air force or marine corps, or by

the adjutant general of this state, or by the national rifle association

of America, a not-for-profit corporation duly organized under  the  laws

of  this  state;  or (c) a parent, guardian, or a person over the age of

eighteen designated in writing by such parent or guardian who shall have

a certificate of qualification in responsible hunting, including safety,

ethics, and landowner relations-hunter relations, issued or  honored  by

the  department  of  environmental  conservation; or (d) an agent of the

department of environmental conservation appointed to conduct courses in

responsible  hunting  practices  pursuant  to  article  eleven  of   the

 environmental conservation law.

Your better off swapping out the stock for a standard one, removing the muzzle break and pick up some 5 round mags.

You than don't have to worry about registering it.

I strongly urge any young adult to leave the state ASAP since it will become even worse with the gun laws and taxes.

If your on welfare its a gold mine for you than and no reason to leave.

Also true.....but what if  you had built an AR 15 for your 16 year old son and it has been a Father/Son thing to go to the range and target shoot a few

times a Month and you decide to keep it legal and register it... Because who wants to the range with their son and get arrested in front of him for something you

have done for years legally for years.  Then if you decide to register his gun under your name and you pass away that AR could never be transferred to your son. It

dies with you in New York. So in 30 or 40 years a lot of what they call Assault rifles are going to have to be destroyed or sold out of state when the owner dies.

There have to be thousands of owners of these guns that want their sons to own and enjoy after their deaths?

What can we/you do?

1. Not register...and if you shoot a lot in New York always be looking over your back....not fun if your with your kids..Not Recommended..

2. Register gun under your name and upon your death family moves it out of state

3. Register it under son's name and family can move it out of state upon his death...gives the firearm another generation of legal use in this State.

4. Some one mention you register in trust for your son/daughter..we as ARFCOM members should look more into this. They use it all the time with NFA  weapons.

These weapons are on a average worth 20,000.00 thousand dollars and they want to keep it value in the family. We as firearm owners want the same.

5. Move the guns out of state now...and never bring them back to New York.   Many of us here own second homes out of  NY state.

Anyone else have any other ideas?  Let keep it legal as there are kids involved here...

Your better moving it out of NYS and purchase a bolt or single shot 22 to shot with.

If you register the weapon they will come for it at some point. Regardless what the Liberals as saying right now. They will know who owns them after registion and will come get it down the road.

Anyone that thinks that will never happen is smoking crack.

I think its a semi-pistol grip if i remember back in the 80s as they defined it. so does semi-pistol grip count ? if so than any semi auto including all of rugers. Remington rifles along with and m1 carbine have the same type of stock  and be subject to registration. If not than your good to go with 5 round mags for the 10/22 and others that would be used for "hunting"

That is not a pistol grip.  A pistol grip is a separate grip that extends below the gun, that and thumbhole stocks are banned.   If you are worried about a standard wood sporter stock's architecture wood rasps are cheap.

well thats the case the OP will need to purchase a wood stock and obtain some 5 round mags  midway is suppose to have more in feb

Easy fix... Standard non-ergonomic stock, remove muzzle break, 10 round mags are legal to own (load with 7).   Just as deadly as before (heh, heh), just not "ugly" to liberals.

Keep the other parts if by some slim chance laws change.  (Or we all win the lottery and can afford to move anywhere we want.)

Yes.   Good advice.     But on the other hand I was just making a point how silly this law is.

That even a target Ruger 10-22 with only a target thumbhole grip is an assault weapon.

What do you expect from a state where it's a crime (crim pos 4th class a misd) to possess a wrist brace slingshot or your smelly sock filled with sand.

You have successfully done your job as a parent.  There is no reason to allow this state to sink it's collectivist fangs into another generation.  Unless your children want to work at a yogurt plant for $9.25 per hour...  That is the future after all for WNY - ask Andrew the Insane.
