From what I'm told ( I don't have 229r but I am also getting one shortly after xmas) there are no preban 229 magazines. The gun started production in 95. But you can use 228 magazines from what I was told.

OK I was thinking the gun was a little too new to have pre-ban mags.
How well do 228 mags work in it? |

228 mags will work fine if its a 9mm 229, its the same mag.

Does anyone know where to find the 10rd mags (.357sig) without that gay plastic bottom? The new ones are soo ugly.

Hey Hoplite, good to see you.
The Sig P229 in .40S&W was unveiled at Shot Show in 1990 according to several accounts I have read. I am not sure when it was first made available in 9mm. I have a mess of preban 9mm mags which I assume were for the P228 as they are unmarked with either the model or caliber. My preban P229 .40 mags are marked P229 .40. |

They have the large zig zag seem and the Sig Sauer circle logo that looks like three S's around a triangle. I have the same logo on the frames of at least one of my Sigs - I haven't checked them all. Witness holes at 5, 10 and 12 rounds. Finish is the dull gray park. The 9mm mags do not say P229 or P228... hell don't even say 9mm. Small zipper seem with spot welds and the same Sig logo and witness holes at 5, 10 and 13 rounds. Dull gray park as well. All mags have plastic followers and floor plates. Your name came up the other weekend at the gathering at Tim's in Elbridge, glad to see you are well. Where in CT are you? My girlfriend lives in Watertown and I'm down there weekly pretty much. The 229 chambered in .357 Sig was released in 1994. At some point they started marking the mags with both .40 and .357 designations. When they did this, I believe they also started putting date codes on the floorplates. A friend has a pre-ban mag that is stamped .40 .357 and the date code on the floorplate says 6/94.
As the .357 Sig was introduced in 1994, they would not have added .357 markings to the mags prior to this time. I believe any factory P229 mag that only says .40 on it is preban. I have post-ban 10 rounders that also have date coded floorplates. Look at your post-ban mags if you want to see what the date code stamp looks like. I once wrote to Sig asking for further clarification on this issue. They never responded. |

Are you talking about the molding date of the plastic base plates? Strictly speaking it would have no relevance to the magazine bodies date of manufacture. (of course 99 times out of 100 it would be right, or possibly even pre date the magazine body, but I'm talking for arguments sake. It's a floor plate, not a magazine.) ;)

It's a floor plate, not a magazine.) ;) Perhaps, but it is the only way I know of to date magazine production, as they never date-stamped the mag bodies. They just started stamping them with the LEO restricted markings after the AWB went into effect. The magazine law in NY is a bit vague, so it is hard to say for sure what would be relevant, and what would not. If anyone can get a better answer from Sig, hopefully they will share with the rest of us. Oh, and there is lots of good info on Sigforum as well, for those who don't know. |

My pre-ban 12-rounders are stamped Sig Sauer P229 .40 with what appears to be a seam on the back (along with some sort of logo and the windows to see how many rounds are loaded).
My 10-rounders are stamped Sig Sauer .40 .357 on one side, and Made in Germany on the other (along with the seam and window on back). My LEO 12-rounders are stamped Sig Sauer P229 .40 .357 on one side, made in Italy (along with the windows on the other side), a blank back (no seam), and the restricted LE/GOV'T use warning with date on the front. |
