Interested in getting an idea of how many people would be interested in getting together for defensive shoots in Canandaigua, NY.
Shoots would involve tactical shooting from concealment against multiple targets, and include tips/techniques to improve your performance. These events could be done weekly (say Monday nights) and could cover handgun as well as pistol and perhaps carbine (alternating weeks) if there is enough interest. Events could last an hour or two each week, and can include low-level/night shooting outdoors. Purpose is to get some hands-on practice throughout the year, regardless of weather. Cost would be kept minimal, say $20 or so. Right now interested in gauging level of interest, as well as logistics of when to do them, for how long, pistol/shotgun/carbine. Let's hear it... |
I live in Victor, and would definitely be interested in them. Carbine and Shotgun specifically, but if i get a handgun permit in the future I'd be in for that as well.
We just need to a small group together, and agree on a time/day and kick things off. Probably 4-6 would be a good number to start with, and maybe Monday evenings, say 6-8 or 7-9 so we can take advantage of the early sunset. If people want to start earlier, that's ok too, and weekends are also an option. Shoots can include barricades, shoot house, moving targets, and as long as it's before 9pm, we can do low-light/night shooting as well. I just don't want to set this up, set up the range, and end up having no one show. I'd like to get a group that's definitely going to show once we figure out what/when, and then make it happen. If we do end up getting a regular group, we can even work out group buys on the ammo or something so we can keep costs as low as possible. |
I am definitely in but I can only do it during the weekends since I go to SU and live in syracuse during the week. So saturday or sundays would be best for me. |
Are you going to run this Edward? Too bad its such a long drive for me, or I'd be in for a few shoots. |
I would definately be in for Sat or Sun afternoons!Handgun,Shotgun,Carbine,I would be game for any,I just like to shoot!
OK- sounds like weekends are best... let me see what's available then. Would we shoot for a Saturday or Sunday? Times?
I will help run this but the goal is to have instruction as well as a chance to shoot; make it educational AND fun. LMI has the range, so we're trying to work with them to get this going for all of us. I'm shooting at the GCL on Tuesday nights, but that's just for the trigger time, and handgun only. I'd like to get some shotgun/carbine time in there too, and having it be educational on top of that makes the drive out to Canandaigua less of an obstacle.
LOL. It would be good to get those in the area to meet each other and take advantage of the resources we have around here to train, practice, and learn. I'm afraid meeting "the man" will prove to be anticlimactic.
That's the goal- and not just shoot paper on a static range, but to make it dynamic, realistic, and educational. All the things you can't do at any other range. I'll check into weekend availability; anyone that's interested keep posting so we know we have enough people to make this happen. |

Ed:
I'd throw in my experience and expertise in training and instruction as well as the 12+ years of running a defensive pistol event. Catch me next Tuesday and we can chat. Any training is good, but why not make it the best possible that you can get? I have actually done a good number of 'off schedule' tactical pistol and carbine classes. I have one coming up with a select group and if it goes well, I will expand it further. BTW: everyone has my invite to stop out to the Genesee Conservation League on Tuesday evenings and find out what our concealed carry scenario shoot is all about. PM me or email me through my website at: www.safeinrochester.com Stay safe! Dave |
Im thinking its a little far from bergen. but i've been looking for something like this for a while. I was going to join the GCL, but at the price and hte fact that my range is right down the street i never did. but it would be nice to get into something cheap to get some pistol time. I'm interested for sure so put me on the list.
Count me in as long as it's after 5:30pm cause it's an hours drive from work. Hope to see this happen!!
Jump on the thruway and your here in 50 minutes. ETA: After 5:00pm would be great for me. |
IF it ends up being on the weekends that would be fine....if its a week night I wount beable to get there till 7 if its an HR drive for me...... |
I'll second Dave's Tuesday night GCL shoots- a good time every week. For $8, and with no range membership required, it's a must-attend if you CCW and are near Rochester. Looking to add to the Tuesday night shoots with things that we can't do at GCL. I'll catch up with you on Tuesday Dave and we can chat. |

I don't have my pistol permit, so that option is out. I would be up to a carbine course in Canandaigua. I live in Farmington, so distance isn't an issue. About 6 o'clock on weekdays and anytime on the weekends would be good for me. $20 is a really good price, but I don't think I would be able to do that weekly considering the cost of ammo too. I would have to re-check my funds. Maybe once or twice a month.
If these happen when will the shoots most likely start to take place?

You realize he isn't the man right? He is the little acorn who shares a name with the man... He is a low-down, M1A stealing little ankle-biter to the man! Nevertheless, Little Ed is a pretty cool guy as well! |
Did you finally "catch" something or are you just "Fudding" it around? Sorry for the hijack Ed, but I just had to. |
So "little Ed", who is gonna be the new NYHT mod? |
Id be interested in such an event on a weekly or bi weekly basis,
Ive been looking for something like this up here, like they have in Tx and and Fla but have yet to find a group like FDCC etc. If you guys want to get something like this going, Id be down to help, I have "just a bit" of experience in stage design too. Take a peak at CCIDPA.org if you like, I helped with design there... as well a builds for several of the tac pits during matches. It seems to be not close to me BUT if on the weekends I know myself an JrKarp would make as many as possible. |
They finally going to promote him from Administrator? About time, couldn't happen to a nicer guy! |

I thank you for your loyalty and kindness towards me, but truth be told: Edward is 5 times a better man than I wanted to be,10 times the best I ever was, and 20 times the best I'll ever be There is no better reward for a man, than to be able to see his sons grow up to be better men than they are/were . My sons are! NOTE:Yes, we all know you were trying to "get a rise" out of Edward , but some things need to be said..................... rather than kept to ourselves (End of hijack of thread) |
Are you saying that the acorn's branch doesn't stand at attention? |
It's not that far away. Just jump on the thruway and get off in canandaigua and your there. I make the trip twice a week. |
If you're offering to help, then we'll take it. If you're not, then we're volunteering you. Thinking about going to the range this Sunday or maybe next Sunday to do some prep, make some plans, and sort things out. If anyone is interested in helping with the preparation, let me know. Right now it looks like based on suggestions that we'll target a Sunday afternoon, maybe 4-6 or so to take advantage of low-light if desired. As for the "old" man, math never was his strongest subject... |
If you need help at the range let me know. I'm home on the weekends and I live only 5 minutes away. |
Will do Rich. Thanks. |
Yes Im offering to help. Did you want to work on stuff this coming sunday? Dec 2nd? I have some exam prep coming up but I think I could sneak away for a afternoon to clear the head so long as Calcuatta NY is not too far away ETA: Aw I found it, it is just east and a bit south of Rochester. ETA2: You guys are planing on making this a weekely or bi weekly rifle thing right? Come snow or shine? Because I think that would be awesome. |
Plan is to train in all weather; probably cycle through handgun, shotgun, rifle each week and include low-light/night shooting. I'll keep you guys updated by posting here if we do anything this Sunday (12/2), if not, definitely next Sunday (12/9). ETA: Will be at the range Sunday 12/2 but only for about an hour from 3-4 or so to check things over and make a plan. Goal is to return next Sunday (12/9) to actually do some work, move targets, and get it ready for actual shooting. Might have to put some rounds downrange afterwards then to "test" it. |
REMINDER:
We will be meeting at the Canandaigua Sportsmens Club, 5280 Emerson Rd, Canandaigua, NY this Sunday (12/9) from 2PM-7PM. (map) Goal is to have a meet & greet for those interested in doing this regularly, do some general planning for weekly defensive shoots, find out what we want to do and when, but we will have the range set up to do some shooting as well (handgun/shotgun only for this day). Will set up shoot/no-shoot targets, steel, and barricades. We can shoot for a couple of hours, order/go get some food, and come back if anyone wants to do some low-light shooting once it gets dark (highly recommended if you have never fired your ammo in low light). Weather is a big part of it, so dress appropriately. If I remember, I'll bring some freebies to hand out, and maybe some toys to play with as well. Would be good to get an idea of who's going, so let us know... |
HI Guys, This will be a great continual training regime, and like Edward stated earlier, it will be held in ALL WEATHER, as only the real world dictates when and where you may need your skills.
Anyways, when you get to the club, the range that will be used is the one furthest EAST from the club house. You will see the set ups. Come out and have fun,, See you there |
I should be able to make it out sometime this sunday. Is it okay if I'm not there right at 2?
Hi Rich. Yes, Basically, from 2-7 is just a time frame to bring as many of you guys out as possible, knowing that most people have family commitments and the like. If you can show up at 2. great,, if you show up at 630, great also, if you can only stay for ten minutes, just to meet with us, excellent. Think of it as an open house. If you want to shoot, do it, if not, and you just want to sit in the cold and chat, fantastic too. See you there
I will see if I can make it happen this sunday, I am studying for a few important test come tuesday next week but I will need a break and this could prove to be a good one.
I will try and make it ,what are the ammo requirements, and how much are range fees?Sounds like its gonna be cold!
I'll try to see if I can make it. I might be working overtime this weekend. It would be cool to get a feel for the place and meet some Arfcommers.
But I won't be doing any shooting. I don't have a pistol permit or a shotgun to use. I hope we can work something out to eventually involve carbines. |
HI PVC1984. Shooting carbines there is one of the goals, during these weekly shoots, utilizing cover, multiple targets, scenarios,, etc,,
COLD?!?!? LOL- it's good training weather! As for ammo requirements and range fees: you have to use our ammo, sold for $1/round, and the range fees will be $20/hr. JK- there are no special requirements for ammo, and this Sunday we will have no fees (though we'll either all kick in for some pizza, or we can go eat), as it is more of an open-house than a real event. Going forward, we'll have some sort of "fee" to make sure we have a good supply and variety of fresh targets (no one wants to shoot an already shredded target), stands, backers, as well as any maintenance on plate stands, barricades, etc. Also, in order to allow our continued use of the range, the club needs to get some benefit, so we will have some part of the "fee" going back to the club to ensure our continued use of the ranges. The main goal here is to have a place where we can shoot in realistic environments, incorporating draws from concealment, movement, weather, lighting scenarios and improvised "stress". These shoots will allow you to exercise your skills, learn, and most importantly have fun. This club is mostly a trap/skeet site, and their handgun/rifle ranges have been ignored for the most part. As long as we can help support the club, maintenance, and improvements to the range, our facilities will continue to improve. At some point we may incorporate the shoot house, moving targets, and even smoke and loud noise into our scenarios. Like everything else, the more we put into it, the more we can get out of it. During some shoots we may use steel targets at 1-3ft and at that point frangible ammo will be a requirement, but we will make that available right at the range at cost. For anyone that has not tried shooting steel at close distances, it can be a fun and eye-opening experience.
We are definitely going to use carbines, and have a range that will be dedicated to their use, it's just a matter of getting this thing started, showing the club that we are responsible, will help improve our facilities, and getting enough people together to keep it safe and fun. Don't want to have multiple ranges going this Sunday, with all new people, including some night fire, etc. which is why we're limiting initially to handgun/shotgun. Also, right now, many of the steel targets are not rated for rifles, but we have targets available that will be, its just a matter of sorting things out at the range this Sunday. So rest assured, we will sort this all out, and it will be a unique range. Take a look around the state now and see how limiting almost all ranges are; static firing line, paper-only targets. Not a problem for target shooters, or to zero a gun, but for realistic training, there aren't many places you can go. That is why this project is so important, so be there or be square. |

what type of shotgun ammo is recommended for these types of shoots?
HI Rich, Buck shot, or slug. I have some military grade slug plates, that are simply fantastic. During the scenarios, you may encounter a bad guy, behind several good guys, so you will be transitioning from buck to slug, Please, no bird shot. this is defensive, and sorry to say, bird shot is far from defensive, To help demo this, (as some guys do use bird shot for home defense) , I will demo the effectiveness of bird shot, compared to Buck to anyone who needs to see to believe.
where's the cheapest place to get slugs and buckshot from locally?
Im going to do my best to make it there at somepoint sunday. I dont have a clear idea on what I have to do yet that day so i'm not sure when i'll be there. but im really excited about this so im in for sure!!lol
Rich- I'm not sure, but I'd suspect that with shotgun season coming to an end here, there are a number of stores that will probably want to unload whatever they have left over. I'd try the usual WallyMart, Dicks, Gander Mountain... places that stock up for deer season; can call ahead to get prices/availability and avoid wasting gas. |
Midway has bereneke slugs for 2.69 per five and wolf 1 opz slugs for 2.89 per 5 |
Good luck trying to find buckshot locally!I usually order it from here. www.streichers.com/ProductList.aspx?catalog=Guns+and+Ammo&category=AMMO_DSHOT |
HI Rich,
Often, I can get what I need, other than LE Low Recoils at Beikrich's in East Rochester (585) 248-3660. |
Interesting...why does Beikrich's not carry the LE Low Recoils? I would think they would have enough of a market here....too bad as I really like that load. +1 For Streichers that's where I get my defensive buckshot. |
HI Again, one of the guys said something about Local LEO's took it all, awhile back, and that the government has grabbed a bunch of it. Is it true? Don't know.
