I am writing to you about A2185, which revises criteria for determining whether a rifle is an assault weapon. This bill is attempting to change New Jerseys definition of an assault
weapon by decreasing the amount of cosmetic features a rifle can have before it is declared an assault weapon.

As you are aware, the federal assault weapons ban ended last year. New Jerseys assault weapons ban is still in effect with no sunset provision. New Jersey already has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation and A2185 would further burden current and future lawful rifle owners of this state by re-classifying
many modern rifles into so called “assault weapons” simply because of the way they look.

In effect, this bill would turn many current law abiding rifle owners into criminals.
