Ladies and Gentlemen.

Last month - after the murders of two of this City's Finest - a great hue and cry was raised for state action to better protect the brave men and women of law enforcement.

We need real action at the state level.

Working together, the Assembly, the Senate and the Governor took the first step.

We stiffened penalties for gun trafficking, and we made the punishment for attacking a police officer much more severe!

Victory was then declared as if the job was done!

Not so fast!

Though we closed the front door on gun trafficking, the NRA is ensuring that the back door to illegal guns remains open in Albany.

Clearly, we need action from the President and from Congress; action to get illegal guns out of our communities.

As our outstanding United States Senators: Charles Schumer and Hillary Clinton have pointed out, between 1988 and 2003, 92 percent of the illegal handguns recovered in this City came here from out-of-state sources.

Because the radial gun lobby has greater sway in Washington than does the safety of our citizens, including New York's Finest, no federal law exists requiring national firearms registration.

In fact a recently enacted "stealth" amendment in a budget bill actually prohibits the sharing of gun tracing information among federal law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, our streets are being flooded with illegal firearms, and I'm hearing that in some of this City's neighborhoods it's easier for a teenager to purchase a handgun than it is to buy cigarettes!

That is the nightmare our law enforcement officers deal with every single day; the same officers - I remind you - that the President and Congress vowed to stand behind after the September Eleventh attacks.

For the sake of our police officers and for the benefit of all of this City's law-biding citizens, I urge you to call, write, e-mail President Bush, Speaker Dennis Hastert, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist.

Demand that they close the flood gates and halt the flow of illegal guns.

If you need inspiration, listen Sarah Brady's message. Listen to the words of Patrick Lynch. They can tell you about the reality of gun violence.

They can tell you about the pain and the frustration police officers and their families endure.

It's very easy for political figures to get up on their soap boxes and pitch sound bites for tougher punishments after the commission of brutal crimes.

They know it attracts the media spotlight.

But where … WHERE … is the hue and the cry;

Where are the headlines and the editorials demanding action; action to keep our Finest from being attacked in the first place?

Why is there no urgency to ban cop-killer bullets?

Could it be that our "friends" in the State Senate are more concerned about protecting their contributions from the NRA, than they are about protecting cops?

Explain to me how we can care enough to provide police officers with bullet-proof vests, and be careless enough to allow the legal sale of armor-piercing, cop-killer bullets!

What does it say about the priorities of this state government's Republican leadership?

WHERE IS THE MORAL OUTRAGE?

The Assembly passed legislation banning cop-killer bullets last year. The Senate refused to act.

We passed the bill again two days ago - along with eight other bills to crack down on gun violence - that again comprise the Assembly's hard-hitting gun-crime-prevention strategy.

Having acted on these bills, we invited our colleagues in the Senate on Tuesday to join us in conference committee, and immediately get to work on further reducing gun violence in our State.

Unfortunately for New Yorkers, the Senate Majority chose to pack up and leave town.

It didn't matter to them that the Assembly - by a unanimous vote - passed legislation closing the loophole that enables convicted, violent felons to carry a gun; an indefensible loophole that must be closed.

It didn't matter to the Senate Majority that we passed legislation - by yet another unanimous vote - to protect victims of domestic violence from later becoming victims of gun violence at the hands of a vindictive spouse or spurned acquaintance.

No, the Senate Majority decided to pack up and go home.

Perhaps, if they weren't so tired from acting in front of the camera, they would have enough energy to act on legislation.

Then, maybe the Governor would be signing strong, new gun laws next week; laws that would better protect our children, our citizens, and especially our courageous law-enforcement officers from the threat of gun violence.

I urge you to call the Governor. Call Senator Bruno.

Ask them why they won't ban "cop-killer" bullets.

Ask them how they defend allowing violent, convicted felons to carry a firearm?

Ask them why they won't join the Assembly in cracking down on illegal guns.

Ask them why they won't endorse the Children's Weapon Accident Prevention Act, which the Assembly has passed for more than a decade!

Ask them why they won't join us in banning .50-Caliber sniper rifles and other military-style assault weapons.

Call them. They won't be there, so leave a message.

Tell them to stop posing and start leading. Tell them to get to work on the Assembly's gun package.

Look at the NY AWB, like the equivalent of the now gone Federal AWB isn't enough!!!!

Some dolt dreams up "Ok, now it should be 1 feature instead of 2."

So basically, as long as the rest of NY is considered part of NYC.

The completely stupid anti-gun agenda will never go away.  I say this because it's just like the people of NY to keep voting in extremely anti-gun politicians.
