I filled up last Friday at Hess in Albany for $2.37 later that afternoon their price jumped to $2.59. Most gas in Albany is around $2.57-$2.69 right now for regular unleaded.

At that one station yes... I should have thought to include when it was $2.37 at Hess it was $2.59 everywhere else. Which maks me think they looked around and figured they could raise it without a stink... so even though they didn't "need" to raise it to account for increased costs, they chose to in order to gouge. Just my gut reaction on that. |

I have not figured out why gas stations can raise the price of gas that is in the tank. I can understand if they get the weekly fill-up and the distributer raised his price. I saw gas go up once last Friday morning and once on Saturday morning at a local station. It sure seems like price gouging to me. Of course my truck gets only 13MPG.

We are around $2.709 though I have found it as low as $2.59 on the South shore. Love my hybrid at 70MPG... (I laugh at people paying $50 every two days or so to fill up) |

I'd like to know what car gets 70mpg? From what I've heard, the hybrids are getting around 60mpg. No complaints here. Running my FULLSIZE Ford F250 on homebrew biodiesel for about $.90/gal. Getting about 16mpg around town, and 20 on the hwy. Enjoy John |

A Honda Insight:  This is the vehicles fuel consumption display after a 20 mile trip, taken while slowing down to exit from Southern State Parkway to Route 109. I took this picture before we switched to Ethanol from MTBE hence the 75MPG reading. The mileage was better with MTBE in the gas but I am willing to trade 5MPG for clean water:  The typical hybrid such as the Prius or Honda Civic will get around 60MPG with careful driving. The Insight does not really get reported on much because they only make about 700 of them a year now and it is a two-seater which nobody seems to like except in a high-end sports car. |

Mine is a manual, 5-speed stick. The automatic (actually a CVT) version did not come out until the 2001 model year. Unfortunately, CVT's do not get as good a mileage as the stick shifts but they still turn in a respectable number in the low 60's. |

I read an interesting article the other day which examined the "break-even" points for people for who purchase hybrid or alternative-fuel vehicles. Long article with lots of numbers and such but, the final conclusion was that you would have to drive an overly excessive number of miles per month/year to actually realize a savings over a traditional gas vehicle of the same class in the short term.
This factors in the typically higher initial purchase price of the hybrid vs. its standard counterpart as well as maintenance and fuel costs over time. For the average driver, it would take roughly five years driving a hybrid to realize a net savings over its gas counterpart. I found this to be a very interesting read... |

BJ's gas if member is now $2.60 for regular.
It is getting really F-ed up if you ask me. Hoppy...I bet if you go back to the sandbox you could get the prices to come down some. Hybrid reality. I just got a e-mail from the Toyota people to come and test drive a Highlander Hybrid. I was looking for a vehicle about 7 or 8 months ago and was going to buy a Range Rover or a 4-runner. Then they said Highlander is going Hybrid so I said I will wait. Then I picked up a 93 GMC S10 for $1,000 so I said screw it. Now I check the price out and it is almost $35-40,000 for a Hybrid....Screw That Ford and Mercury have a Hybrid SUV for a little less. In reality Gas would have to hit $5.00/gal to start breaking even. Unless you could put down about 60% then it might be worth it. At least for me. I would have to finance,and then get Full coverage. When I figure it out I am still ahead, but I have a feeling we are going to see $5.00/gal in the near future...... |

yeah, if gas prices continue going up like they have over the past two years, Gas prices should hit the $5.00 mark in three to 4 years. Hopefully legistlation governing gas prices will be passed before we reach that point. I don't like hearing that certain gas companies have had their biggest profit margin ever (as was in the news this week)... while we are being gouged at the pumps. Scary |

I was out today on rt 347 in Port Jeff Station. There is an Amoco/BP gas station. Yesterday am regular unleaded $2.77 tonight $3.29. I don't even know if that is legal. Sunoco station 200 yards down the road still $2.77. Hopefully this doesn't get out of hand.

It looks to me like it's a supply problem.
The region hit by the storm produces about 7% of US need for oil: a decrease in supply. See CNN report With oil demand staying about the same (actually slowly rising due to population increase), prices are bound to rise. I don't think it's a matter of the amount of oil available to the world, the problem is can we get it out of the earth fast enough? This also looks like it's worth reading: Life after the Oil Crash Hybrids, renewable energy sources (solar, wind, etc.) all start to make more sense now, especially with tax breaks offered. |

Don't worry, gas prices will eventually moderate and everyone can go back to buying large oversized inefficient vehicles, driving them all over the place with no passengers, and wasting gasoline like it was seawater. Then the whole supply/demand process will start all over again. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it - most people seem to have learned nothing from the the gasoline crisis of the 1970's. It is rather funny to hear everyone complaining about the high prices but at least be thankful you can still buy gasoline when you want. Anybody remember rationing in the 1970's with odd/even days and being limited to no more than 10 gallons? I'd love to see a Hummer owner sit in line for two hours and then be told he/she could only get 10 gallons. That would be good for 90 miles or so or maybe enough idle time to wait in another line to purchase another 10 gallons somewhere else. (I just had to rant because it bugs me no end that we did all of this to ourselves because we did not learn a thing back in 1979) |

$2.959/gallon today in Orange County. 2 Days ago it was $2.649.
It's not even the gasoline prices I worry about so much. It's the home heating oil and electricity prices. We're definitely in for a MAJOR economic recession, if not a full-blown DEPRESSION. |

I guess I am the asshole. 3.29 would be CHEAP here. Lowest was 3.49 and I topped off because I am afraid of what is going to happen in the morning. I think I am going to start looking for a diesel VW rabbit to commute to school with because this is getting out of control. I never thought I would see gas rise $1 in 2 days.

Can anyone confirm this? Gas is going uo to $4.25 after midnight and rationing gas for trucks to 15 gallons . I was told this was on Channel 12 News LI and that some congress man is trying to stop it.

100% load of hooey. Gas WILL hit $4.00/gallon in some areas soon (as reported by CNN.com and rightly so), but there will be no rationing, and it's unlikely to hit $4.00/gallon tomorrow. |

I'll go take a pic of the station down the road tomorrow morning. I would not be surprised to see $4 tomorrow, its pretty damn close to that now and, if the rate of increase for the last 2 days continues for the next 2, it will be around $4.50.
Also, there is already gas rationing and > $5 pricing in GA right now. (unless you were referring to just our local area) |
