Sherm8404 is going under the knife tomorrow for surgery to remove a Chondrosarcoma linking his right ribs and his T5 vertebrae. In case you don't know what it is, its a bony form of cancer that grew outward from his T5 and fused itself to his rib. The procedure will remove that vertebrae and part of the rib for sure.
I just want to make sure that everyone starts saying their prayers for John, his wife Jane and their three children. This is a delicate procedure, which has possible impotency implications. (Not really, but I told him that anyway!) John's spirits are as high as ever and I know he'll be fine, but a bit of prayer and good vibes never hurt anyone. The hospital is Sloan-Kettering 1275 York Avenue in Manhattan, which means he'll be in the BEST possible hands with the best this country has to offer! Good luck If anyone needs additional info, please contact me via IM. Wave will also be monitoring his situation throughout the day. |

OMG, I had no idea. Prayers sent for a speedy recovery. John is one of the finest human beings that I have ever met!

Goodluck! Hes in good hands at Sloan-Kettering trust me....
My friends working on thier expansion by the church. |

I tried calling John yesterday but the number I was given was constantly busy.

I just spoke with John's wife, she said that the last update she's received was at 7:45pm today. The surgery started late by about two hours (11am) and they're expecting that at 12am tonight she'll have another update. However, as I was on the phone with her, she was paged...maybe by the hospital.
The update she received was that the spinal orthopedic specialist was with John from 4-5 hours at which point the nuerologists took over. There was apparently an issue at that point which necessitated the cardio thoracic guys to take over for a bit. This isn't a good thing, but it may just have been to look at his condition or to see that his anesthesia was ok....I'm speculating here though. All I know is that they weren't supposed to be needed. They also finished up with operating from the back and have flipped him and are now operating from the front. I think this means that the vertebrae and ribs have been cut and the final frontal cuts are coming soon. Then they'll pull some bone off of his hips to use for the bone graft. Apparently they took bone from both the disk above AND below the "infected" disk, so they'll be replacing that as well as adding the prosthetic disk, or whatever its called. Anyway, Jane is doing very well, she sounded like John last night on the phone, except that she was worried about the cardio guys coming in. Its significant enough that they called her to tell her about it....but with no further details. I'd volunteer her number, but I think one of us calling for updates is enough to drive her crazy. She seems very edgy with calls and pages, so I think its better to leave her alone. She seems very strong, I guess she'd have to be while married to John! |
Necrophile, SOMEBODY, it's after 4 am....please tell us he's alright and resting comfortably....
Jon, get well soon and come back here! |
I called his wife at 12:15 last night, when she told me she'd have an update. She didn't pick up the phone, so either she'd just gotten some great news and was passed out in bed already or waiting for the call still. I think its too early to call now, but I'll call as soon as I get to work.
Thanks for the update.Keep the news coming, and we will keep the prayers going
I called the hospital and John is in ICU. I don't know if its common procedure for a patient to be in ICU after his type of surgery. I'll call again tomarrow if we don't hear anyother updates. I may also have his wifes cell #, if we can't get any info, I'll call her as a last resort.
I heard the same news as Squid.....I THINK the ICU may be a precaution as they did call in that cardiac consult.....maybe an anesthesia reaction?
I guess no news is good news at this point..SN will probably update the thread soon.... |
I spoke to Jane again and John was not supposed to go to ICU, he was supposed to be in "Recovery." I believe that ICU was used to watch his cardiac situation which presented itself during surgery, although Ed could probably elaborate more. She wasn't too concerned about it though, considering the excellent news that accompanied this little glitch.
GOOD NEWS!!!! John apparently has full motor function and all extremities (as of 9am) are sensing pain and are working. I don't think he's exactly said this to anyone, I think they perform their basic "pin cushion" test on his body and see his reactions. His reactions say that the docs didn't botch the job! I tried calling Jane again a minute ago, but she wasn't answering. I'll try again later and get back to you guys. |
Thx for the update. Great to hear.
Hang in there John, Good luck with the recovery. |
Speedy recovery - prayers for you and the family.
ETS: Speedy recovery (John implied) - prayers for you and the family. Sorry I did not make this clear. |
Reserve all prayers for the family, I'm in this with you guys praying for him. |
Thanks to you for the update and to God for answered prayers! I would rather not speculate on why he went to ICU,since I have little information to go on. The important thing is that he is fine and has all motor and sensitivity functions. |

I just received a message from Jane, where she said that John's doing well and that's about it. I'll update the info when she calls back, but no problems!!!
That's good news. He just has to take it one day at a time now for the road ahead. He's pretty young isn't he? That should work in his favor.
Great news!!! |
He can't be that young...nobody could get that ugly in less then 30 years... Glad to hear that he's doing OK. |

Hey guys, I just got today's update from Jane. Here's his status....she's still waiting for the cardiac guy to give her the skinny on whats going on with John. She also said that he's in excrutiating pain, but most of it is stemming from his chest tube, which should come out within a couple of days. He does have some pain in his back, but nothing on the level of what we'd expect with this sort of operation. He has pain management people coming down to see what they can do for him, he's already on a lot of morphine.
She said that physically, he looks 100% better than yesterday. His swelling has gone down significantly, that he's been extubated and he's talking, but not very coherant. He's better at answering questions than in carrying a conversation, but that's to be expected with someone who's doped up this much. However, she did say that he's answering questions correctly, which means mentally, he's with it. ARFCOM FIRE MISSION Jane mentioned that the doctors want John awake more than he is. They said that he's being lazy (give the poor guy a break....only a day after surgery!!) He needs to be up and awake more so that he can do his breathing excercises and cough more. SHE WANTS PEOPLE VISITING HIM. HE'S ABLE TO TAKE VISITORS IMMEDIATELY AND SHE WANTS AS MANY FRIENDS AS POSSIBLE TO COME IN. She says it'll help his depression and also help him physically. So when do you guys want to start visiting him? Hours are between 11-8 and anyone can come on down. If more info is needed, let me know and I'll get it. ANOTHER THING...do you guys want to get something for Jane to cheer her up? She's with the kids in a hotel which is set up like an apartment with a micro and toaster. She says she was prepared for this, but some nice stuff wouldn't hurt either. Maybe some flowers or a nice dish for her to warm up. Maybe even some toys for the kids to keep them occupied. I don't know, I'm just trying to figure out what we could do. |
Thanks very much for the update. Sadly gents, I am seriously under the gun at work right now and may be working all through the weekend. I hope I'll be able to visit Jon, but it wouldn't be until at least Saturday...... Please guys, step up and organize, at the very least, go and annoy him so as to get some payback for the poor nurses.... |
I'll be dropping by Thursday afternoon, time permitting. If not then, definitely Friday.....
Is he still in ICU? Anybody got a room #? |
Damn got work all day on Thursday then leavin friday morning for Florida
I will stop by either tomorrow or Friday. SN, do you have his room number?
No room number, Jane wasn't sure if he'd still be in ICU or moved to a bed. I asked her to call if anything changes. Unfortunately, i couldn't get tomorrow off, so I'm aiming to go maybe Sunday.
