Is it legal to load your magazines up home in NY and bring them to the range? Or am I better off just loading my mags at the range?

yes, its perfectly legal. I assume you mean NYS and not NYC; I can't speak for NYC regs.

It's definitely not legal in NYC for pistols (unless you have a carry permit) and definitely not legal for rifles under any circumstances.

There is an En Con statute that says something like longguns cannot be loaded in the chamber or magazine when being transported in a vehicle. I have assumed this included magazines which are not in the gun, but I could see where the statute could be read the other way. I've never bothered to research the case law, if there is any, on this statute.

There is a case out there which held an unloaded magazine in the gun was considered loaded. This was in the context of whether a conviction for weapons possession was 4th degree (unloaded) or 3rd degree (loaded).

We all know this is bullshit but the case is out there.
