Back in 1973 I saw a movie titled “Cops & Robbers”.
The short of the story is that two NYC policemen, one a Detective and one a Uniform, relatives I think, get Real tired of all the hypocrisy they see around them and decide to steal something big so that they can quit the force. The Uniform’s Partner is shot, seriously, but not fatally, during their planning. The Partner, it should be noted, doesn’t know about the plot. When some Mob Guys are booked, the Detective gets the Bright Idea! Go to the mafia and see what they will pay $2,000,000 for. (One million for each.)
So the Detective goes to one of the mobsters in disguise and makes the deal. He is told, in a very quick manner, a phone number I’ve been wondering about ever since. Last week I finally got the movie on DVD. I watched it with Closed Caption on. As soon as the mobster asked “How good is your memory?” my finger edged to the pause button. The instant the mobster said,”691-9970” I hit the button. I finally got the number! He always said it so fast I could never get it.
For the $2,000,000 Question, who or where does 691-9970 connect to?
By the way, I saw the movie in the Herricks Theater, just across from the shopping center where a store called Trunds is/was located. It would be interesting to know that those two places are still in business.
And yes, I think it is a nice little movie. Give my regards to Mister Joe.
