Yes it's easy but having someone with a boresighter will save you about $20 in ammo costs. Last time w/o a boresight, I was 3 feet right and 4 feet low at 25 yards...took me a full box to get it in the black. With a boresight, took me 3 rounds.
With boresight, it's definitely quicker. But just in case without the boresight, here's a quick and dirty way: Set your rifle (or AR15 upper) on a stable surface:
1. Look through your barrel and center your barrel at a target (say a distance is 50 yds).
2. Now look through your scope and adjust and center the reticle (windage and elevation if needed to) at the same target.
Check back and forth between the barrel and the reticle of scope to make sure they are centered.
Now, shoot to zero your rifle.
