A Fort Worth police officer shot a man suspected of robbing a number of businesses.

Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting that happened Monday afternoon on Westcreek and McCart.

There are several businesses at the busy intersection and there were witnesses who say a police officer opened fire on the driver of a green truck.

Police were responding to an armed robbery at a U-Haul location when an officer spotted a green Ford Ranger truck that matched the description of the getaway vehicle used in more than a dozen other robberies.

It was a typical afternoon at the U-Haul Self Storage Company, until a man walked in wanting something other than a storage unit. "He came in looking, as a customer. Asked about storage then showed her a gun and told her he was robbing her," explained U-Haul Marketing Director Ken Birch.

The officer reportedly fired one bullet into the truck, and hit the suspect in the upper torso.  "The officers went to make contact with that green truck and at the intersection of McCart and Westcreek and the shooting occurred," Fort Worth Police Department Sgt. Chad McHaffey said.

Witness Henry Sepulveda said, "When we turned around, right after we heard the gunshots, we heard a bunch of people screaming and stuff.  Next thing I see is about eight squad cars going after some car."

Sepulveda believes the suspect may have had a weapon. "He either had a gun drawn or he was going for a gun and that's why shots were fired," the witness claimed.

After being shot, the suspect kept driving but pulled over and surrendered to police a few blocks away.  "The pickup pulled in and about five or six police cars pulled in behind him and pointed their guns at him," said Leroy Schneider, the owner of Westcreek Centre, who also witnessed the incident.

Surveillance video from the U-Haul may be the final clue police need to solve the case. "We have about 18 cameras on sight," Birch pointed out. "He was on a 40-inch screen when he walked in the door."

The man, whose name hasn't been released, is said to be in critical but stable condition at a local hospital.  The officer who shot him will remain on regular duty while the case is under investigation

Yea...this suspect has been really busy. He's hit approximately 10-15 storage businesses in the last few weeks armed with a large butchers knife and a pistol.........not anymore.
