Corvette can burn up the track and do a day's work

SNOHOMISH -- Every time Dan Morgan takes his 1984 Chevrolet Corvette out for a spin, his wife, Patti, knows he may be gone longer than anticipated.

It's not that Morgan's a showoff with his black beauty of a car. It's just that his Corvette is something out of the ordinary.

His Corvette is a truck.

"If you see it in your rear-view mirror, you think it's a Vette," Morgan said. "But once it passes you and you see it from behind, you think it's a truck."

That's because it is both. The Corvette has been remade with a pickuplike bed.

"There's nothing else like it," Morgan said. "My dad made sure of that."

Morgan's father was Don Saunders, former chief financial officer for Bayliner boat company in Arlington. Saunders died several months ago but spent much of his life as in love with cars as he was in love with boats.

"My father loved cars," Morgan said. "He had a fascination with them. He went on a number of round-the-world competitive races. He just loved having a lot of different cars."

The Corvette truck was a favorite project of Saunders, who had several Corvettes. When his 1984 black Corvette was damaged, Saunders decided rather than fix it, he would have it made into a truck.

"He did months of research to make sure that somebody hadn't already done something like that," Morgan said. "Then he took another three years to have it built."

Saunders employed several auto body experts and his brother, Ken, who worked on the car at his estate south of Arlington.

"The car was lowered and lengthened," Patti Morgan said. "The back half looks very much like a truck. It even has a tailgate that works."

The truck has been entered in car shows and twice took Best in Show honors.

"We've seen other Corvette limos and station wagons, and even a tow truck," Morgan said. "But there's nothing else like this one."

Saunders enjoyed the vehicle for about three years until he became ill with cancer. Then he gave the truck to his son.

"Everywhere I go, people want to know the story of this truck," he said.

After a recent trip, he told his wife he'd been stopped by the State Patrol.

"I knew it was OK, because I wasn't speeding or anything," he said. "The officer just said he wanted to see the car. He said a friend of his had seen it at Kla Ha Ya Days (a Snohomish summer celebration) and had a picture of it on his desk."

Another time, they caught the attention of a driver who ended up rear-ending the car in front of him.

But recently, Morgan decided that he just doesn't spend enough time with the Corvette. He and his wife own Morgan Maintenance Inc., a contracting and remodeling company.

So they've been advertising the Corvette for sale.

"We've had some interest," Patti Morgan said. "People want to know all about it, and they like the fact that it is so unique and a one-of-a-kind."

But its uniqueness also means it needs just the right owner.

The Morgans say it's for sale to the right person at the right price. They think Don Saunders invested more than $150,000 in the vehicle.

"Now I'd like to be able to get it in the hands of someone who will appreciate it as much as we have," said Morgan, whose e-mail address is [email protected] .

I never new TRG had black hands.

Must be the duality of goatkind or something.

Also, down around West, a couple of the kids I grew up with, chopped the front ends off of Chevy El Caminos and one did a Ford Ranchero. They replaced the front ends with a 91 Camaro, and 2 98 Camaro's, they replaced the Ranchero front end with a 97 Mustang GT front end(against my suggestion which was to use a Taurus or Crown Vic, cuz I'm a dummy). They souped them up and raced them around Ross and Aquilla. I know it didn have anything to do with the front ends, but they made them damned fast. Every now and again, I see them driving around, though they arent as fast as they used to be.
