So, I called to make an appointment for the 100yd rifle tube at Bass Pro Shops in Grapevine... Guy gives me run-down including "No Wolf Ammo", and I inquire further... he's worried about steel core.  Email to wolf indicated that some jackets are "bi-metal" but 223 is ONLY copper jacketed lead core.  I show up at the range and counter guy says "there's no Wolf ammo ban here, just no FMJ; softpoint only".  Ok, so thats all I have.  He asks "What caliber?" and I tell him .223 to which he says "that's 22, no biggie, go for it" and I said "Hey, its YOUR range" and down I went.  My hour nearly over, I push target out to 50 yds and I guess I get a flyer.  Target drops off carrier and will not return.  Very dim down there, but it looks wires are off the track or something.   I go up, tell them the target wont retrieve and he gets an attitude:  "You telling me the range is down?" and I reply "I don't know, target just wont come back"  He grumbles "Its always those ARs that do that".  I respond "sorry dude, later".   All's I can say is shit happens.  Guy seemed pretty cool at first, but his 'tude after the fact was kinda pissy.  Oh well... looked like that was about the best indoor range of 50 or more yds.  Guess I wont be going back.

That range used to be great, but that was 4 years ago.  Since then it has steadily deteriorated due to lack of maintanence.  The 100 yard tube has always been hit-or-miss (no pun intended); it was broken the first time I had a reservation for it - in April, 2000!  IMO the tube is so poorly designed it's no wonder the thing is broke-dick all the time.

Over time their firearms check-in/check-out procedure became so onerous that I decided  to stop going there all together.

BP range sucks.  I'd rather not shoot than be forced to go there.  The Shooting Gallery in Fort worth off 820 and Lancaster is the best range I've been to.  The guys are real cool and friendly.  They have a 50yd rifle.

Anyone ever been to the indoor one near Garland, Targetmasters?

Found a neat site, listing local ranges....

I shot at Targetmasters once about 3 years ago with a good friend.  We were there for about an hour, but as soon as we walked in I could taste lead, that's how pitiful the air system was.  After we left I was coughing up black gunk for 30 minutes and I had a migrane like you wouldn't believe.

That place was f*cking dangerous.  I can only hope they've improved their air-handling systems since then, otherwise you're looking at the equivalent of eating lead-based paint every time you take a breath in there.

Now you know why I started driving from Carrollton clear out to Backwoods T.R.A.P.S. and C.C.G.R.!

The rifle tube at Bass Pro is always jacked up. Last time I went there, they gave me duct tape to affix my target to the deal that takes it downrange because the guy before me shot destroyed the clamp that holds the target with a .300 Win Mag.

They must have just put that FMJ rule into effect in the past few months though, because when I went there around April-May this year, I walked in with a .303 Enfield with 3 boxes of UMC and S&B .303 FMJ ammo, and my yugoslavian SKS with 4-5 boxes of Barnaul FMJ ammo, and they never said a thing.

Their pistol range is pretty nice though. If we're just gonna shoot the pistols, then it's pretty convenient.

I hear ya El_Roto, there aren't many good places to shoot close to Carrollton.

Hey, I'm in Carrollton too... will have to check out backwoods.  Its just up Josey a fur peice.
As to bass-pro's range rules... it appears that everyone there has a different idea of the rules... no wolf, wolf OK, no AR, AR OK, no FMJ, FMJ ok if its a small caliber, etc.  Oh well.

[edit: backwoods = no FMJ]

I shoot at targetmasters , you have to tell them to turn the fans on sometime, but the rifle range is not bad. they dont care what kind of rifle you shoot, just no steelcore.

Last time I was there [about 2 yrs ago] I got thrown out[by the police] The asshole that runs the range, a fat lazy SOB, told me no Wolf when he looked at my ammo. I asked him why and he said cause they are steel bullets. I told him not anymore. He pulls out this HUGE magnet that picks up the whole cartridge as the case is steel. I argued with him about that for a minute but he wouldn't relent.
I went out to my truck and grabbed my kinetic bullet puller, went back inside and poped a bullet out of the case. the magnet he had would NOT pick the bullet up, hence not steel right? The a**hole then told me still no wolf and if I didn't like it I could leave.

I woldn,t  leave so he called the cops on me and they said he had the right to refuse me service and escorted me out the door. They were polite and apologetic about tho.

I plan to go back, and keep it stirred up, but haven't as yet.

PS you did a nice job as RO at Gunstock. Thanks

Sincerely,

The Garland Public Shooting Range is a good outdoor range for rifle, pistol, and shotgun.  Used to have decent prices on reloading supplies, but its been a couple of years since I've been there.  Used to also have a decent selection of range rentals.

GPSR is OK but their no FMJ policy and 1 shot per second rule sucks.

Still, I have been going there since 1996 as I liked their $10 range fee and open layout.

That is until I Discovered Magnum Sports Center last week. It is a bit of a haul, in Sanger, but well worth it. Rapid fire and FMJ all you want, as long as you keep it safe. Very rudimentary range in a 200 meter washout, but the rangemaster/owner is super cool.

I had my barrel smoking, blew through 280 rounds in about 30 minutes. Firing as fast as I could get the red dot on on target and pull the trigger. it was the funnest time I have had at a range in years.

I am ruined for any other local ranges now.

Under this site's "Tools & Service" pulldown, there's a space for range-locator.... It would be super nice if it were available and had a way for folks to update the ranges' pertinent rules (no FMJ, 1shot/second, etc).  Its really hard to keep track of what ranges permit this, what ranges prohibit that, fees, etc.

That's a great idea. It would be awesome if it could be implemented.
