while reading someone's thread i saw it mentioned that a wider safe was desired for handgun shelves. my tiny lil safe had no room, so i made room. i moved the shelf up as far as reasonable, then made a rack for the pistols. its basically a U shaped wood frame. fits the edge around the edge of the safe. the back peice is drilled and has 7 dowells insertined in the holes. put the barrel over the dowell and presto! nice little rack for less than $5

if any one wants pics, let me know. i still havent figured out how to use the photo server.

I have seen similar "dowel" type mounts, and would love to see your plans for this to see if it would work for me, or a variation of it. I have a mid-size safe, not too wide, but only a couple rifles...

now i've put my foot in my mouth. i cant get the damn pictures to load to anything. i even tried putting it as my avatar. nothing works. i swear it's here. any one in fort worth want to come by and take pics of it for me? i swear i have it.
damn computer is about to undergo a .357SIG upgrade!

Best idea I saw for making a handgun holder was to glue carpet to the interior of the door, then use velcro straps to hold the handguns to it.

Been a while since I saw the setup, but it worked like a top. Heavier guns required an extra strap or two, but you could keep LOTS and LOTS of guns suspened on the door.

Took up very little space too.

I covered the inside door panel with tool drawer lining material from Home Depot (use the thick spongy kind). I used 3M Super 77 aerosol adhesive to stick it on. That stuff never lets go. The hooks are simple chrome-plated clothing hooks dipped in the rubberizing compound like you use for tool handles. I went an extra step and used an Xacto knife to trim out the lining where the hooks attach, so they are flat against the metal panel. A few stainless steel screws, lock washers & nuts and I was ready to go. I've had to add more hooks since the picture was taken, but this has worked extraordinarily well for several years. Not shown are the orange tags I use to quickly identify loaded guns (but always verify).

Actually, they're Hi8 video tapes. But one of them has 18 minutes of silence.

Unfortunately, none of them have anything that Lordtrader would be interested in.

anyone have a table saw? I might know someone, or I will have Home Depot or Lowes make the cuts I need.

I have come up with a design, but need to implement it. I have a roto-zip style tool to help do the fancy shapes I need, but will need some nice straight cuts....

I need to add a shelf in my safe, but will also use your excellent idea of hanging hand guns on the door; that's an elegant use of space.

Couple comments on the rack - make sure you oil up the dowel rods and backer board or finish them. If not the wood will pull the oils off the gun and we all know what that will lead to.

Your rack gave me the idea to make one only free standing. Take you backer board with dowels installed and attach a bottom board to it. Make the bottom board stick out about 6 inches so it will be stable. This way you can move it around on the shelf and still have the rest of the shelf for storage. I'll try and make one up this weekend and post a pic of it.
