Hey guys,
I will be taking my anniversary trip to New Orleans in a month or so and just wanted some opinions from the locals on what to do and where to eat. We have been there a few times on day trips but never spent the night. Recommendations on hotels are also appreciated. It will be a weekend trip probably for 2 nights. I plan on eating at Drago's for sure. Thanks in advance for your help! -SS |

If you search this forum, you'll find plenty of answers to this question, but for starters, a friend of mine says that if you go to Drago's, try to go to the one in Metairie. While the one in the Hilton is good, the original is better.
A lot of your answers will depend on what you like. Generally, if a restaurant has made it for at least a year in NEw Orleans, it's a good place to go. Avoid chain restaurants (Bubba Gump may be an exception, they are usually good). It will also depend on where you will be in town and how mobile you're going to be. http://www.neworleanscvb.com/ is a good place to start researching. |

To the OP: What is it that you like to do? We've got darn near everything but shooting here, and that can be done in the surrounding parishes.
ETA: My hotel suggestions are the St. Pierre and the Andrew Jackson in the Quarter, but without knowing where in particular you plan on staying or what you want to do, I cannot assert that they are the best choice. |

I just got back from NOLA yesterday. Another awesome trip.
I've posted my favorite activities in the past so I'll only add the new ones from the last trip. The VooDoo Vibe bar. Specifically, Shelton Sonnier and the Zydeco VooDoo playing. Shelton played for my favorite Zydeco band until last year. Now that he is out on his own, his talent is really showing. He has picked up a great bunch of musicians to play with him. Also went to BMC - Balcony Music Club. It's on Decatur near Esplanade. While the VooDoo Vibe is a loud, crazy place - BMC is really laid back. I don't remember the band but it was a guy on an acoustic guitar, a guy on an upright bass and a girl on a traditional washboard. Very good show. |

My new favorite NOLA place to recommend is Cochon and Cochon Butcher Shop. Better muffaletta than Central Grocery.

They start slacking off and trading on their name. Look at Port of Call; they used to have a great burger, but once everybody thought so, they started going downhill. I was there about a month ago for a convention at the Hilton Riverside (nothing special, but a good serviceable room, clean, convenient, $120/night convention rate + tax, parking, taxes, etc = ~$160.). Have been going to the Quarter for 3 decades on and off.
I thought Cochon Butcher's muffaletta was over-rated and too small (Whopper size) for the $13 price (sandwich only); but I read all the hype and wanted to try it. Next time I'll go back to the Central Grocery. It's a matter of taste, i.e. some like beer some like whiskey. K-Paul's was as good as I remember; go for lunch when they open around 11:00-11:15 and it was easy and good value. If you are grown, and like nice things, M.S. Rau antiques on Royal St. has enough to keep you busy looking for several hours; its like a museum. Cohen & Sons Antiques (guns) doesn't have much that I find interesting anymore, and the counter-help was useless. Rau's doesn't have a large selection of guns, but they had good quality (percussion & flint boxed pistol sets mostly), and if you look like a serious buyer for $20-50K guns they will get serious on the asking price. They have a great deal of art, jewelry, etc. from a few thousand up to several millions of dollars. And they have good air conditioning and dehumidification in the store 
I look for scotchymcdrinkerbean's NOLA tips, he is better than a Michelin Guide book. |

Thanks for the replies so far. We are planning on staying somewhere around the French Quarter. We want to do the aquarium one day and just chill/eat/drink some as well. A hotel somewhere close (within walking distance) would be nice.

I look for scotchymcdrinkerbean's NOLA tips, he is better than a Michelin Guide book. I went to Central Grocery and bought 2 muffalettas the first day we were there and put them in the fridge. A 1/4 "slice" was the perfect late night snack to settle a drunken stomach. Although, I have taken Scotchy's advice and had one from Napolean's and it was great as well. The two times we have gone to K-Paul's it was incredible. Oceana Grill on Conti is our favorite. Catfish Lafourche (spelling?) is new and my wife's favorite. I had a similar dish with jambalaya topped with a crab cake topped with a fried soft shell crab topped with their Oceana cream sauce topped with fried crawfish tails. I wanted to try King Creole in the French Market but missed this time. I saw them on the Food Network earlier this year. If you like it hot, they can do it for you. |

You can Google search for major hotels in or near the Quarter, but scotchy has already told you two of the best small, independent ones. The Andrew Jackson is practically in the middle of the Quarter; the St. Pierre is near the edge (hence quieter when you want to sleep). Both are walking distance to the Aquarium (if you allow that the entire Quarter is walkable), but are not the closest to it. I'll also give a shout out to the Hotel St. Louis, but its central location may make it a bit less quiet when you really want to sleep.
Your choices for food are still wide open. Antoine's, Arnaud's, and Galatoire's for the upper end; Coop's for the local neighborhood feel. Lots of others in between, and all good. Don't make the mistake of confining yourself to Bourbon street - unless you really only came to party and buy touristy T-shirts. If you've never had a Pat O'brien's Hurricane, by all means go get one; I prefer their Purple People Eater, but YMMV. There's a place on Bourbon that advertises a drink called the Hand Grenade. I don't know what's in it, but it's very popular and will get you smashed in a hurry. One note of caution. There has been an uptick in street crimes in the wee,small hours of the night. Keep your wits about you and you'll be fine, but remember that you cannot carry in bars, so your options will be limited in the personal protection department. |

Decent rates and decent location. Also have been to the Maison Dupuy and the Cardinal Richelieu. I'd recommend all of them but the Chateau is by far the best value in my opinion. Remember that all of them are in the Quarter and the Quarter atmosphere applies. http://www.chateauhotel.com/reservations/index.html I usually get up in the morning and walk to Crossant D'or Patisserie for breakfast and save the hotel packaged stuff for a snack. If you're into the whole wine and cheese thing I recommend the St. James Cheese Company. |

My wife and I went to NO for our anniversary three years ago. It was both of our's first time there.
We stayed at the Royal Sonesta which is centrally located in the French Quarter and has it's own parking garage. It was a little pricey but nice. Naturally, being right on Bourbon Street, things can get a little loud at night but it wasn't too bad. We enjoyed ourselves and being to just casually walk around, never being more than 10 minutes walk from the hotel, was nice. We're in our 40's so the Bourbon Street scene was nice once but not something we're likely to do too often. If we go back we'll stay at the Sonesta again. Royal Sonesta- New Orleans |

LOL Don't get me wrong. We had a great time and we were both happy that we did it. I still laugh at the "Big Ass Beers to Go!" signs. That was great. 
It's just not the scene we'd look forward to every weekend and since it's a days drive from here, not something we're likely to travel to do again. But everyone should experience it at least once. |

This weekend's shooting had nothing to do with the second line. In all likelyhood, you're seeing the natural result of some good police work. NOPD just took down some major gang people, including multiple RICO counts and also a bunch of guys in a video shot inside the jail where the prisoners had guns, beer, and drugs.
There will be a lot of vacuum filling going on in gang land for awhile. |

It was a 2nd line with everyone wearing the same t-shirt with an old guy's picture on it. I assume that was Irv. It was great. I'm not going into the eating places, we just have too many that are way good.
The one thing that Everyone really should do is carve out a day and visit the WW-2 museum complex, do everything, eat at John Besh's "The American Sector". Watch all the movies. Do all the interactive stuff. Dont hang around the neighborhood after dark,...............Hey It's New Orleans.

Things to do in New Orleans....not go. I guess from living here my whole life that place is a piss pool and just down right horrible. I mean you can do the normal vacation things, Decatur, Bourbon, etc.... I have more fun in Baton Rouge, and down here. Come to the Bayou Black swamp tours that is more interesting than New Orleans.

Yes Baton Rouge is better than N.O. any day of the week I mean seriously same old burnt out bar/clubs, what are we up to 2 or 3 murder's a night? 3/4 Tourist with beads during Summer trying to see tits, and that is about it. I have lived here my whole life, so I guess I just see all the same old shit when I go. Granted outside the actual city there are some very nice restaurants,etc...but in downtown Canal area lol that is just murder,piss,robbery,etc.. If you plan on staying in New Orleans, and do not wish to be on Bourbon and price is not a huge factor of where you stay - for me the Lowe's Hotel is by far the best place to go. They are THE BEST hotel in the city. It is upscale, but not in a snotty way. You can either go to the bar in t-shirt and shorts, or a nice suit.
It is not the cheapest place to stay, but it isnt the most expensive. They have top notch service with excelent rooms, bar and restaurant. My wife is an Art Director for New Orleans magazine, she deals with "high society" a lot here (not really my scene) New Orleans magazine, New Orleans Homes and Lifestyles, ect.... and the LOWE's is the preffered place to be. We had our wedding party stay there, our rehersal. The place is top notch, def look into it, if you plan on staying in New Orelans. As far as food goes: Cheap - Got Gourmet Expensive - Dicky Brennen's or Herb Saint Metairie - Austin's Sushi - Rock-n-Sake |

Dela Chaise is one of my favorite places to go. The House of BLues can be enjoyably also. ALong with Balcony Bar I try and stay in the Uptown area, Magazine and the Saint Charles |

Going to the Saints game tomorrow. Can/Should I carry if I have a MS permit with Instructor Certified Sticker..

Keep your wits about you and you'll be fine, but remember that you cannot carry in bars, so your options will be limited in the personal protection department. There's also the random things that just happen in NOLA like the Foo Fighter's show at Preservation Hall - http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2014/05/foo_fighters_shut_down_st_pete.html. I was knew something was up on Friday when my wife told me that Dave Grohl was standing outside of the Krazy Korner watching the band. My wife is friends with the washboard player for Crawdaddy T and the Nutria Rats who play there regularly.

Anyone have kid-friendly recommendations for restaurants in the area around the aquarium? We're going to go stay in the area for a few days and are looking for ideas on where to eat with a two year old. We'll be hitting up the kids museum, aquarium, insectarium, etc.

PSA - American Sector (at the WWII Museum) is no longer a John Besh restaurant!!!!!!
Due to an undislcosed reason (thought by many to be a personality conflict between the executive chef and museum management), the restaurant is now being run by the same folks who do concessions at either the Dome or the Arena. Do not expect the food to be nearly as good. That is all. |

Hotel tip for anyone in town for a convention:
Country Inn and Suites on Magazine St. It's a short walk to the Conv Center and a slightly longer walk to Bourbon St. I've been to New Orleans numerous times over the years... when I'm in town for fun I usually stay at the Royal Sonesta or the Maison Dupuy, and when in town for conferences I usually stay at the Hilton Riverside or the Hyatt Place just for the convenience. But the Hilton was sold out for my recent trip, so I stayed at Country Inns and Suites. I found it by looking at hotels.com and comparing guest ratings to star level, It's an honest 3-star hotel, but its guest rating is 4.5 out of 5. I would certainly stay there again... in fact I will be staying there again next week. |
