Labour have destroyed national identity. Now they want a Gordon Brown Bank Holiday

The Government has dusted off plans to turn the August Bank Holiday weekend into a celebration of 'Britishness'.
According to the Guardian, it 'would allow people permission to celebrate everything they like about the country and help frame the progressive case for controlled immigration'.
In a speech to a Left-wing think-tank, Home Office minister Liam Byrne said: 'We are not a nation of Alf Garnetts.

Too late: The Government has destroyed the notion of Britishness

'And in our heart we know Britain is richer and more interesting because of the contribution that migration brings.'
Labour's researchers have come up with 27 (why not 25 or 30?) different ways in which we could celebrate our common cultural identity  -  including street parties, community work, festivals of food and drink down the local pub and a speech by the Queen.
Warming to his theme, Byrne said: 'What people wanted above all was a space  -  permission if you like  -  to celebrate what they like about living in this country.

'I myself have become convinced that the August Bank Holiday weekend has the virtue of being in the summer and already being a bank holiday.'
He's sharp, this boy. It would never have occurred to most of us that August Bank Holiday is a bank holiday which falls in the summer.
But that's the way this new breed of weird Labour politicians addresses us.
They're convinced we're all incapable of thinking for ourselves, or doing anything without official sanction.
Only in a New Labour La-La Land would people need permission to enjoy themselves, to celebrate their own national identity and shared values.
We don't need a patronising, former student activist, junior minister to tell us we're not 'a nation of Alf Garnetts'.
The only people who have ever suggested we are a nation of Alf Garnetts are members of this Labour Government and their acolytes at the Guardian and the BBC.
For the first ten years they were in office, they missed no opportunity to smear the vast majority of people  -  the English in particular  -  as 'racists'.

Anyone who so much as raised an eyebrow at their reckless policy of uncontrolled immigration, their slavish determination to surrender our sovereignty to Europe, or their ruthless enforcement of the pernicious doctrine of 'multiculturalism' was damned as 'BNP', 'Little Englander' or 'xenophobe'.
This Stalinist tactic was used to shut down legitimate debate about government policy, in shameful defiance of one of the greatest totems of 'Britishness'  -  the right to free speech.
Having done that, they then set about another of our historic freedoms - the right to free assembly - by banning demonstrations outside Parliament and Downing Street.
They even sent in their goons to arrest a poet who had the audacity to read out the names of those killed in an unpopular war at the Cenotaph, the ultimate symbol of the sacrifices generations of British men and women have made to preserve our liberty.
These intrinsic manifestations of 'Britishness'  -  fiercely protected and handed down the generations - have come under sustained assault by Labour ever since the Blair landslide of 1997.

National traitor: Prime Minister Gordon Brown betrayed the British voters over the EU treaty

Institutions that have stood the test of time have been savaged, undermined or abolished, including our fundamental right to self-government.
Gordon Brown, who is now shamelessly banging the drum for 'Britishness', shuffled off to Lisbon to sign away 1,000 years of history in a grubby little backstairs stitch-up.
He didn't trust the British people to decide their own destiny as an independent nation, yet now he expects to buy us off with a few street parties and some platitudinous flag-waving.
Labour has foisted an alien system of government upon us and replaced our tried-and-tested Common Law with the venal 'yuman rites' act, which elevates the interests of terrorists, illegal immigrants, drugs dealers, murderers and child-molesters above those of tax-paying, law-abiding British citizens.
Parliament is now little more than a talking shop, rubber-stamping diktats drawn up by foreign bureaucrats in Brussels.
We've had ten years of constitutional vandalism, which has turned the principle of universal equality on its head.

Thanks to Labour's devolution policy  -  described at the time in Orwellian terms of ' strengthening the Union'  -  the heavily-taxed English majority are relegated to second-class citizens and the subsidy-junkie Scottish Parliament may soon hold a vote on leaving the United Kingdom altogether.
Only under New Labour could the ancient office of Lord Chancellor be occupied by a greasy, pole-climbing party hack like Jack Straw - who makes grand speeches about Magna Carta and then trashes Habeas Corpus by supporting an extension of detention without trial to 42 days and scrapping the right to trial by jury.
It's not so long ago that Straw was accusing the English of being a nation of bloodthirsty racists, to appease the vast Muslim vote in his own constituency.
Now he poses as one of Brown's handmaidens of 'Britishness'.
The presumption of innocence, another of our proud liberties, is also hanging by a gossamer thread as we are bombarded by arbitrary fines and fixed penalties for the most piffling offences, enforced by a vindictive standing army of wardens, inspectors and 'community' officers, who would have done credit to Nazi Germany.
As the Guardian was hailing the Government's commitment to 'Britishness', local papers in Wiltshire were this week reporting the case of a motorist who was threatened with a fine unless he removed a St George's flag from his parcel shelf.
He was told the flag was 'racist' and was 'offensive to immigrants'.
In the West Midlands, two Christian preachers were told they would be arrested for 'hate crime' after venturing into a 'Muslim area'.
Meanwhile, we are spied upon by the world's most extensive network of surveillance and speed cameras.
We've even got microchips in our dustbins.
How 'British' is that?
We are governed by a smug, insular, metropolitan elite, who show not the slightest indication of understanding those who live in our glorious British countryside.
Labour's Parma ham-fisted policies have decimated rural communities from the Scottish Highlands to deepest Cornwall, thanks to everything from the foot and mouth fiasco and the Common Agricultural Policy to the closure of post offices and the withdrawal of bus services.
Now the Government plans to litter what's left of our green-and-pleasant with a plethora of artificial 'eco-towns'  -  think mini-Milton Keynes with windmills  -  just so they can salve their consciences over so-called man-made 'global warming'.
And they kid themselves we can be bought off with a bank holiday dedicated to ' Britishness'.
After a decade of a disastrous policy of encouraging cultural apartheid - resulting in homegrown 'British' citizens blowing themselves up on the Underground - they believe we can all be brought together at one giant, multi-culti Union Jack-bedecked, Knees-Up, Gordon Brown love-in, complete with organic chicken tikka and lo-alcohol scrumpy.
'Oi, Doris, get your gladrags on, girl. We're off down the street party to help frame the progressive case for controlled immigration.'
Impertinently, they expect the Queen to endorse this insulting stunt, after ten years of Blair upstaging her and Brown stripping away her last vestiges of authority.

If I were Her Maj, I'd tell them I was washing my hair next August Bank Holiday.
What was it that Dr Johnson said about patriotism being the last resort of a scoundrel?
