Just got my Car Tax reminder through from the DVLA.
There's a leaflet inside about MOT computerisation.

It says:
A new computer system is now being installed in MOT testing stations.

This change will not affect your actual MOT test but will provide aditional benefits to you.

MOT records will be held on a secure database and provide proof of MOT status.

New internet and telepnone services to check MOT status when buying a vehicle.

Reduced theft and forgery of MOT test certificates.

(To check the status, you will need the registration mark and either the document reference number from the V5c registration certificate or the test number from the new style MOT test certificate.)

Stinks of big brother to me, along with CC charging and number plate recognition camera's

Its worse than that...

You can now get your car tax on-line, so the 'system' is also capable of checking your car insurance against the insurers database to make sure you're covered.

I do alot of work with an Accounting firm. They just had an enquiry from the Inland Revenue asking why one of their clients hadn't declared one of their bank accounts. They already knew all the account details, including it's balance!

I had my MOT done about a month ago with this new sytem.
The guy I know at the garage said it is big brother but not on the motorist it's more about the MOT stations themselves
They have to log onto and off the job so no one can fiddle the time it takes to actualy do the MOT.
Some garages were doing offers and sqeezing that many MOT's into a day they could not physicaly have checked everything .

I would assume that the Police will soon be able to check at the roadside whether an MOT is valid!

Will probably reduce their paperwork no end......

Everytime a HORT 1 is issued by an officer to prodece your documents at the local nick, your requested documents have to be recorded in the HORT 2 log and then checked manually.........

I would say that ir may reduce the number of unroadworthy pieces of crap floating around, so called "pool cars".............

Situation:  Officer pulls in Johnny Baseball cap, driving a MK3 Escort with wide wheels and bald tyres, for a roadside check.  One phonecall to later the officer knows he has no MOT (which he claims is at home), no tax (which he claims was stolen) and no insurance (cos he has just bought it this morning)..............

Result:  Johnny will be walking home from this point, going to court in a couple of weeks, and his shitter car will be cubed unless he provides full documentation at the recovery yard!

Excellent!  Forgive the rant but I used to recover 10 - 12 wrecks a week when I worked on the police recovery scheme....... the damn things laid around our yard for months until the courts granted a disposal notice.

I thought we were supposed to Fight the system, not support it.

Sorry guys!  Way over my head with all the "Big Brother" stuff!

You'll be telling me next that you're not in favour of National ID cards?

And as far as cars go. anything that can get the deathtraps off the road faster (impounded or otherwise) gets my vote!

Quite agree, having to wait for young Master Chav's 'other road user' victim to be cut out of his own car (because Chav's brakes failed) So you can then render medical aid, load him onto the old helio - co - peter and take him to hospital is very frustrating!

I avoided using the word Chav, for the sake of the innocent "none driver" species!

I went to more than one horrendous smash where the monkey in the driver seat of the untaxed shitter managed to bail and leave his shed behind.........

Not traceable, because the car is registered to Grandma Ethel who sold it to a nice young man who just took all the paperwork from her when he bought the car for just over a £100 (in other words a giro car)
