Can anyone recommend a good one piece mount (30mm tube) for a high top receiver?  Preferably one that sets the sight forward and increases eye relief.

The Armalite and US Optics mounts that Southern Gun sell are quite popular and well made.
I have owned a couple of these (still have one I think if you're interested) and they do offer some forward reach. But it was never enough for me. That's why I now cut off the High-Rider rail on my DPMS receivers and fit extended rails.
But if you don't want to go that route, then I would recommend the Larue Tactical SPR mount as this seems to offer quite a bit of forward reach and also seems well made, if a little pricey.
But as always, when it comes to guns, if it's what you need then the price is irrelevant

I was actually speaking to a dealer in Texas about the SPR forward mount, they have nothing but praise for LaRue products.

If you get one sent it, even if you do get charged import, it'll still only be a similar price to something Fat Bob could sell you, and he doesn't do gucci kit like LaRue.

Not really, the ARMS mounts don't reach forward enough.
It is possible to fit a clamp on rail extender, but on the High-Rider's they just look daft.

I'd go for the Larue if you can get one

Cheers guys, the SPR by Larue does look nice and the QD setup is a bonus, the Oberland site, whilst impresive, lost me.  I don't really know what I'm looking for and am going to have to experiment anyway...... as an acquaintance down the road from me recently said "Yer a long necked f***er, yer need 4 inches on that butt stock!".........

Basically, I have put my Schmidt PMII back on my Remmy and bought a Leupold 6.5-20 for my AR, think I'm going to have to try a couple of mount set ups before I settle on something that I hope will be fine.................. I seem to have spent a hell of a lot of time removing scopes and re zeroing when i should be just setting them up and leaving them alone!

Many thanks again guys....... patience always appreciated.

Tried to ring Bob this afternoon prior to posting this, but got some strange Yank answering machine..........

I got it quite well.....

I will say that many a vendor on the EE fourm will praise LaRue also. I use G&R Tactical for all my LaRue needs.

Seems for me when I order directly from LaRue I get an e-mail stating an invoice showing my purchases and amount...Yet nothing was ever shipped and my CC was never billed...That was well over a month ago. Maybe they won't supply to us ex-Texan's

Cheers Matt, had a lot on my mind today.............. will try harder!

I followed the checkout procedure through, but there was no shipping price, just a enter your card details section........ well having been bitten on the ass by Dillon, I would like a price, so have emailed accordingly.....

I have very little experience of LaRue stuff, I was just having a little (harmless) fun with elucidate's post and the seemingly superfluous remark. The comment wasn't meant to demean the products, what I have seen is good quality.

Some days I just wish I kept my mouth shut.

Well, most days actually.

But Dave (bunnyassassin) really asked for it, missing the obvious link like that. I think he's suitable chastised now. If not I'll take away his phone-porn privaledges.

Oi, you lot better stop picking on me.

Besides, had someone said "Have you guy's heard about that tacpoint scope" and a chinese guy told me they were good, I still wouldn't believe him

I have it on the word of a RM Commando who lives with another commando that actually get to use these things in some ultra sneaky beaky scenarios, that they are very good. If they are good enough for operations then they are easily good enough for my bunny bashing/Range trips. (The same guy reccomended my Eotech and he certainly made the right choice there)

Mind, he was talking of the rails and not the mounts, but you just have to look around on here to see what people think of them.

Bunnyassasin, none of this would have happened if you'd have caught on straight away. And Matt, stop being Sarky!!!

I'm coming up your way Friday for a week. Emailed Greeny and asked him to get the beers in and what rifle(s) should I bring, but got no reply.

Ha, but I know where he lives and I'll be there whilst he's at work.

So, where do I sign up for this Warcop trip?

Reply from LaRue:

Sorry David,

We are not currently setup to export due to our own State Department rules...and we don't have a timeline yet either.

Mark LaRue

Where you staying Matt?  Beers on me!  As for Saturday, just spoke to John Masefield this aft, and he said to turn up on Charlie High (not high on Charlir... Ha) just after 9am, Saturday 20th August.  Will ring you and sort transport mid week if you like......  ......

You mean he's not set up for walking down to the post office and sticking a stamp on the jiffy bag.

These people are getting ridiculous. Since when can't you export even a scope mount??This is getting out of hand.
I don't remember any of the news media telling us that Al Qaeda, or anyone else is surfing the shooting websites and buying all their kit from Brownells etc.

It's only a fucking scope mount.    State Dept
rules???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Do they work for Wes?

Maybe we need a little secret area where we can keep information of export friendly dealers. I intend to fix my website this week when I'm in Denmark and bored again at nights, so how about I include something there.
I can already put down 5 dealers who are happy to export. Mind I'll have to ring them up and check, but they already exported to me and told me anything else wouldn't be problematic.

It seems some people don't like the hassle and will use any excuse.

I wonder if it'd be different if a serving commando phoned up and enquired about goods for use in sandbox, I might just have to try that one out....

Dave

ETA - Update:

Wes isn't a bad guy, it just seems as if he is covered by state export laws, or the I.T.A.R regulations have been misinterpreted to him. I asked about him sending me a Surefire and mount this is what he said:
TECHNICALLY, SINCE THE VLTOR SM-E IS DESIGNED TO MOUNT TO A WEAPON, WE CANNOT EXPORT IT.
However, I don't know if he is referring to ITAR or state laws. If it's state then fair enough, but ITAR is specifically designed to protect military based exports, not civilian. Maybe the US guy's don't know exactly what the deal is, and therefore, understandably, are just taking the safe option.
Wes is sending me the torch, to my address in California, so I think maybe he's just watching his 6 on the export front which is a very understandable viewpoint.

Also, just a thought, but there has got to be a definite market for a UK friendly dealer over there who can supply the more specialist stuff such as ARMS, LaRue etc.

ITAR here:
www.epic.org/crypto/export_controls/itar.html

It's purpose:

(a) Purpose. Section 38 of the Arms Export Control Act (22 U.S.C. 2778)
authorizes the President to control the export and import of defense
articles and defense services

So, as you can see, the first paragraph of ITAR tells us that it's entire purpose is to regulate the sale and export (in our case) of military articles, and NOT civilan based shooting apparatus.

However, you do have to be careful as some are both (Like KAC Fore-ends for example)
Sec. 120.3 Policy on designating defense articles and services.

Designations of defense articles and defense services are based primarily
on whether an article or service is deemed to be inherently military in
character. Whether it has a predominantly military application is taken
into account. The fact that an article or service may be used for both
military and civilian purposes does not in and of itself determine whether
it is subject to the export controls of this subchapter.

IT does seem as if McAfee may be breaking ITAR unless they are being careful and not selling on their website as:
(ix) Software designed or modified to protect against malicious computer
damage, e.g., viruses.

And the part which the Americans are listening to:
(a) Any article not specifically enumerated in the other categories of the
U.S. Munitions List which has substantial military applicability and which
has been specifically designed or modified for military purposes. The
decision on whether any article may be included in this category shall be
made by the Director of the Office of Defense Trade Controls.

So, for example, I wouldn't forsee any problem with Yankee Hill Machine,as they never designed their products to be for .mil, and LaRue, they get used on, but weren't designed for .mil.
A.R.M.S mounts however, are designed for .mil and therefore are on the naughty list.

Plus we have state laws to contend with, which may or may not be different.

We really need someone in the know to come help us with this.....

It's the same with mildot scopes, nee an export licence, but the same scope with a normal cross hair is OK.

An AR stock also requires export licence, for the same reason, it's designed for military use.

I've said it before, but there are NO sensible gun laws (and in this case it extends to gun export rules), all the criminal acts can be covered by other laws.
