The fiancee wants to be closer to her parents and there's really nothing holding me in Illinois except for my parents and they could care less where I lived so were moving to Omaha. Just have to line up a job and an apartment
I'll be building a SBR to celebrate when I get there ETA: I'm currently at the Iowa 80 truck stop getting gas. I am officially done with Illinois. |
What line of work are you in/looking for?
Things are a bit less "restrictive" outside the city limits of Omaha, by the way. |
Eh nothing special. Private security most likely. I'm still going to school and whatnot. My fiancee is the one looking for the "real" job. She graduated with her degree in elementary education and has her IL teaching cert. so she's going to try her luck at getting a teaching job out there. I may talk to the future FIL about getting a job at his office doing whatever.
Check out the Elkhorn area. Recently annexed by Omaha, but still a very good school system that pays well. My oldest daughter taught kindergarten there until recently, and still works as a substitute. My grandsons needed a full time mommy. Any way she loved working in that system, and the Elkhorn area is very nice.
We'll look into it, thanks for the tip |
Omaha proper has gun registration. I'd look outside city limits...
Paypal and Gallup are pretty big employers, might be worth checking into. |
Looks like Strat will get bumped by the new guy. Strat81 is just shy of 3k posts in 17 months, while Dtrain's post count is 3.3k in 13 months. Well at least the Kansas Nebraska hometown forum will come to life a little more. We welcome you Dtrain!

I'm hoping to be in Nebraska by christmas. As soon as I get a job offer i'm there
It's Nebraska....not a whole lot goin' on around here...except for truck & tractor pulls... I'm go'in back to sleep now...try not to wake me up again, Scott... |
+1 to trying to stay out of Omaha for gun related reasons
or out of Douglas/Sarpy counties would be even better Bennington LaVista Platsmouth are decent or Fremont but it is a tad farther away but in Dodge county and thus cannot be annixed or otherwise fucked with by Omaha |
This is important. Elkhorn used to be their own city but Omaha literally just took them over. The people of Elkhorn were not pleased. What kind of work are you looking for 323? |
My buddy is moving out of Elkhorn today. He owned the house and was as happy as a pig in shit until Otown took them over. Assholes even made them change their street numbers and addresses. FUCK OMAHA! And Rick, sorry to wake you up, it won't happen again, as heaven knows you need more beauty sleep. |

Something that I can live on while I finish school. I've got 3 years experience in both armed and unarmed security. 1 year of that being a supervisor. |
Id look into corrections I did it its not bad and pays decent as for security all the firms around this area are pretty low rent |
Eh, i'm not worried about that so much. The firm I'm with right now is pretty low rent. I may look to see if the casino's are hiring security at all. |
forgot about them the 3rd hand stories i have heard is they do pay OK enough to live on anyway let us know when you get to town Id be up for a after noon at the bullet hole or something Ill let ya shoot my supressors as i am too poor to have a MG |
I was just at the bullet hole on the 2nd. My fiancee parents live around 132nd and Dodge |
Not sure what you're going to school for, but Paypal and Gallup are pretty big employers and both usually have entry level jobs available. Otherwise, check: www.nebraskajobs.com/ nejoblink.dol.state.ne.us/ |
I'm majoring in Political Science, want to go to law school |
I just wanted to be closer to you buddy |
We have pretty much everything worked out. We'll be moving out there October 20th.
Don't forget to check out Eastern Nebraska Gun Club (ENGC). Black rifle friendly. |
SWEET the only nebraska range i've been to is The Bullet Hole. |
They do 3-gun and other shenanigans at ENGC too. Bullet Hole isn't bad, but it's pricey. Keep out of Cabela's unless you have more money than brains. |
Bennington is going to be annexed by Omaha. |
were looking in La Vista/Papillion were also looking out closer to Lincoln |
Lincoln is bad also for guns. |
Probably, but not for quite a few years, I'd say at least 10 years. Too many nearly-bankrupt S.I.D.'s and hardly any businesses bringing in much sales tax. Not much incentive for Omaha to annex yet. |
But not nearly as bad as Omaha. Yeah, we have an anti police chief, but at least we don't have arcane registration/purchase laws. AND we have the Salt Valley lakes close by. Honestly, Ashland is a pretty good town, too. They've cleaned the scrapyard up and there's quite a bit to do around there. I think there's a shooting range just north of town. |
Lincoln is better than LaVista, which has a CCW ban on the books, and better than Omaha with it's open carry permit and registration requirements. I carry every day in Lincoln without issue. BTW the gun club north of Ashland on 66 is a trap club. Just shot 300 targets there Sunday afternoon |
So since i'm coming from IL i want to get my CCW. What are the requirements?
Official Nebraska State Patrol CCW info
www.nsp.state.ne.us/findfile.asp?id2=252 You can come check out our local CCW page CCW Nebraska |
I'm not sure about residency requirements. Otherwise, you have to be a Good Guy (no felonies, no drugs, no beating your wife, etc), take the class ($100-$150), pass the written test, pass the shooting test, get fingerprinted at a NSP barracks, pay the self-defense tax ($100), then wait. The shooting test is easy. FBI Q-target out to 7 or 10 yards, IIRC. You might want to look into Waverly if you want a small town just East of Lincoln. I heard they have a titty bar, maybe someone else can confirm? |
If you base your residence on location of strip bars a bit closer to Council Bluffs is a better location. |
aside from King Tom and the Sheriff not signing form 4s Lincoln is OK for guns better than the cities with CCW bans Only 2 odd things are it is illegal to leave a firearm in your vehicle more than 24 hrs in Lincoln and there is a small list of misdemeanors than make you ineligible to own a handgun in the city limits assaults sexual assaults impersonation of a LEO obstructing govt business resisting arrest the last 2 I am surprised they got through as there is a fair contingent of dirty hippy protester types in Lincoln there are a few more but I'm too lazy to look um up |
Wouldn't know anything about it. Maybe ScottRyan could tell you about the TTbars in Fremont. I heard they shut them down. |
The city of Lincoln gets a postcard with your handgun information on it when you purchase a handgun in Lincoln. |
When I say stay out of Lancaster county/Lincoln it is more than gun owner reasons.
Lincoln is the most liberal place in NE. It is the capital of the state. The Univeristy is here. It is a refuge city for foreigners. Lots of foreigner population here. Mostly orientals and Arabs. Very noticeable even if your not paying attention. One of the highest homosexual populations per capital in the nation. All the city/county officials are liberals. Wheel tax on your vehicle. If you want to be around this sort of stuff then... |
WTF is a wheel tax? |
You are taxed by how many wheels your vehicle has. This is on top of the normal state motor vehicle registration. If you have a regular car/truck, you pay 4 wheel taxes. It is $49 per wheel currently in Lincoln and goes up to $54 in 2010. Omaha has this also. If you have a dually 1 ton pickup then you pay 6 wheel taxes. So you would pay $294 in addition to your state motor vehicle registration. |
Also note that on top of vehicle registration charges, you must pay personal property tax when you register each year. Depending on the car, it's usually a few hundred dollars. Nebraska is one of the most taxed states in the region. |
so not only do you pay sales tax when buying the car, but you have to pay tax for OWNING the car? What kind of fucked up shit is that? |
yeah to give you a idea last new car i bought was a 2004 Chevy Colorado It was $1400 to put the first set of plates on it and $250 every year after and I live outside the city limits if I lived in the city limits add 2% onto that plus wheel tax shit it is $125 a year to license my motorcycle cost me $400 for the first year |
Ya know what they say about Freedom not bein free |
Correct. It's their way of encouraging you to drive a shitty 1977 Chevy C15 pickup with no safety features. Nothing like being punished for owning nice stuff, right? And they wonder why there's registration fraud with folks registering their cars out of state at relatives' homes or vacation homes. |
