Not quite sure what that has to do with slavery or the oppression of black people. Alaska just trying to stay relevant in the conversation I guess.

So the real problem is the slave owners were put one step down the pecking order?

And were pretty brutal about it.  I remember one old timer I used to work with saying without a hint of shame those pre-US days were the height of SE Native culture.

It is a world away, but I remember my Grandma talk about about the old timer's stories around Bethel she knew in 1960-62.

There is an interesting PDF called the "bow and arrow war days" around Hooper Bay, fighting wars of extinction:  https://www.researchgate.net/publication/261929331_The_Bow_and_Arrow_War_Days_on_the_Yukon-Kuskokwim_Delta_of_Alaska

There was a big battle up around Kalskag between yupiks and invading indians.
Supposedly turned the river red with blood.

Near the village of Quinhagak there is evidence of a old village that was wiped out during a famine by other yupiks.

Here is another good book.

IIRC, they kicked the Russians' ass at their new settlement of New Archangel (Sitka), and then Baranov returned with a big fleet and Aleut allies to retake it.

Could you imagine kayaking from Kodiak to Sitka?
