Guy got arrested, gonna say, in south Des Moines. Was a black guy.
Held for months, land lord threw stuff out, ended up he shouldn't have been charged.
Dude got screwed.

Spending time in jail and not paying rent are two separate matters.   Landlord doesn’t care why you’re not paying rent.  All he cares if the rent is paid.  Don’t pay and your stuff goes to the curb.   Sometimes life sucks.

Jay Rodney Lewis in West Des Moines. Ca. 2012

Being charged wasn't the biggest issue for Mr. Lewis. It was the unreasonably high cash only bond.

ETA: It wasn't the landlord who threw his stuff on the curb. Mr. Lewis didn't pay his rent and a small claims suit was filed. It was the county movers (PCSO) who put it on the curb for it to be cherry picked.  Ironically, PCSO kept Mr. Lewis' guns upon his acquittal and release.

i didn't know that...  how in the hell is that possible?  did he not do what was necessary to reclaim them, or did something else take place?  also, and very importantly, how do we know this for sure?

First, and most importantly, Mr. Lewis got his guns. When the sheriff's office does an eviction, all of the property is moved out of the residence. Of course, the firearms are secured and taken to the sheriff's office as they cannot be left on the curb. The claimant merely has to go to the sheriff's office to get their guns. In Mr. Lewis's case, that was the irony. He was charged with crimes related to a firearm, and upon the jury's not guilty verdict, he reclaimed his guns. I believe Mr. Lewis worked for an IRS call center or something similar and was hired to his former position upon his acquittal. So there was some marginal justice there as well.

The sheriff's office absolutely does NOT move ANYTHING to the curb.  They are court ordered to be present at all evictions to protect all parties involved.  NOTHING else.  It is the sole responsibility of the landlord to move all property to the curb.  NOBODY is allowed to "cherry pick" property on the curb during the eviction.  I did evictions for three years.  Where'd you get your info on them?
