Hotel recommendations for Detroit?

I'll be going to the Auto Show, and was curious if anyone had good recommendations? I don't need anything fancy, just a place that has some decent dining around it. I'll be coming from Indiana, so something on the northside wouldn't work so well.

Do not stay in the City of Detroit....period. Dearborn or Liviona would be a better area. Twenty minutes to the Auto Show.

We'll have to agree to disagree. The downtown area isn't too bad, but like in any big city watch your back after dark. If you can't afford downtown check out Livonia or Royal Oak or Madison Heights. All of these are 20 minutes from downtown.

ETA: south of Detroit is Windsor. I think "downriver" is the closest you get to a somewhat safe suburb south of Detroit in Michigan. Woodhaven, Taylor, etc. but that's not my neck of the woods.

Check out Fairfield Canton

Easy on and off I-275, it puts you half way between I-96 and I-94 (both direct routes into Detroit) and there are a sh!t load of restaurants in the area. I think rooms are around $75.

Since I live in Livonia, I give props for Livonia. The exit is quick for 96...I would stay the heck out of Detroit and give no one down there any money at all whatsoever. Dearborn would be a good recommendation

Detroit sucks, downtown and all. Go in and out.

Can I answer a question with a question? (Or several....) What specifically are you looking for? How many days/nights are you staying? Are you planning to seek something else for night life? Plan a trip over to Canada? (no handguns allowed accross the border, you'll need proof of US Citizenship).

If you plan to hole up in the hotel most of your visit and just go out to eat, the Pontchartrain would not be a bad thought. Once there you will not have to deal with the traffic heading for the Auto Show (horrific) and can walk from the hotel to the show in about 1 minute (it's right accross the street).

If you plan to do other things, which are not Downtown, then I wouldn't stay downtown at all. Look into areas mentioned here by others, but also don't overlook Southfield. It is right up the Lodge Freeway and is a convenient as any of the other areas mentioned.

If you can give us a few more specifics about your plans, we may be of more help.

We usually come up Saturday morning, go to the Auto Show - after the show we go find someplace good to eat then go looking for a gentleman's club. We've been twice, and the first year we did go into Canada. We were told by the lovely Canadian at the crossing that we were "stupid Americans" for only having driver's licenses and not birth certificates. Silly us.

Last year we stayed at the Dearborn Hyatt but it seemed like we had to venture around a lot to find a decent place to eat (however this might be because we didn't know the area too well).

From Dearborn Hyatt, get to Michigan Ave (US 12) just barely South. Go West and you'll run into dozens of good eateries, from middle eastern cuisine (Al Ameer a couple miles North, on Warren Ave. is my favorite) to Buddy's Pizza (many think the best in Detroit area). Lots of other places, and if you hit Telegraph Rd. (3 miles West of Southfield Rd., where you started from) the choices to the North and South are nearly endless.

As to Gentlemens clubs, those in Canada are hard to beat. You WILL need proof of citizenship, one of three things: A birth certificate, a voters registration card, or a passport. Beginning sometime soon (I think in 2006) a passport will be the only option.

If staying in the USA, Michigan Ave, has a couple, BT's (about a mile and a half East of Southfield) and the Silver Cricket, about a mile and a half West of Telegraph. There are others, but those are some of my favorites..... (been awhile at that!)

Stayed at the Comfort Inn in Roseville when I went to Detroit in January '04. It's at Little Mack, near Gratiot, just off of I-94 at Exit 232.

A friend of mine told me that "leopards Lounge" in windsor is a nice place for some entertainment. Sometimes they have lunch and dinner deal. Also Check out the fine escort services available in Canada.

Well, to answer your original question, the Marroitt inside the General Motors headquarters (Ren Cen) would be a nice place to stay with decent dining around it. Also, walking distance from the Auto Show.

I checked out the Marriott website, and it looks really nice except that I'm not willing to pay $169/night.

There are several hotels in Southfield, around the Telegraph and I-696 area that are easy access. They are a 20 minute or less drive downtown and within 10-15 minutes of Livonia, Farmington, Bloomfield, Novi and all kinds of shopping/eating. If you want to avoid the hassle of driving and paying for parking downtown, you may want to ask if whatever hotel you are staying at is offering free shuttle service. The last few years when I had to go downtown to the auto show for work, I drove to the Southfield Marriott, parked in their lot and took the shuttle back and forth. It was so much easier than driving myself.

You might want to check out the Troy/Madison Heights area. They have Fairfield Inn, Residence Inn, Exteneded Stay and many other hotels right off I75. Just make sure when you call it is the location off 14mile RD and I75. Only 15 to 20 minutes to the Auto Show.This area have plenty of decent to fine dining and you would only have to use I75 to the Auto Show, back to the room and back home.

. A guy I know working at the Auto Show from New Jersey was staying there (arranged by his company) and says it really, really sucks. So much so that he moved this evening (tried and finally got authorization from his employer) to another area hotel, I think it was a Marriott Courtyard.

Also, if planning to trip to Canada, verify whether or not a passport will be required. I believe it will be sometime in 2006, and am not sure when that goes into effect.

Hey rcoers,
are you driving to Detroit? You can stay at a hotel and then drive to a a station of the People Mover-Click me and park your car there...we drove from Roseville MI(Where we stayed) and drove to the "Grand Circus Park" station(which had underground parking) and take the People Mover straight to the COBO center.

That way you don't pay out the ass to park.

As far as Canada, make sure you have your birth certificate. They will give you a hard time(as they did with my family when I went over to Windsor for dinner one night)-but they will still let you in. You can get your birth certificate copy from your local courthouse(I don't know how that would work in Indiana).

Eating in Windsor-we found a restaurant called Top Hat, it's a BBQ type place. It's near the tunnel that goes from Detroit to Windsor. It was good stuff.

Give this a shot. You will probably have no choice but to pay special event pricing for this if you stay downtown. The Marriot in the Ren Cen is the closest & the Pontch is basically across the street from where the auto show takes place. This is a great hotel though.
