NPR (in Ann Arbor) just said that the legislation was already introduced, but I haven't been able to find it on the website.  Still looking though.

That's really good news, but I think we should "ALL" take some of these press releases and post them at gun ranges, gun stores to let our population in on the fact that these morons are still trying to take away our right and keep calling our reps. Let them know that if they pursue any gun control laws at all, they'll be commiting political suicide. I would even go so far as to give each of these gun grabbers a "polite, tactful and even tempered" phone call at their home, letting them know that you know what they are up to and that it's your intention to make sure that these kinds of introduced legislation do not become law. Be polite and respectful, but calling them at their homes, may let them know we mean business and we aren't going to take it anymore. Don't make threats, just be respectful and sincere. If you don't want to call from your home or cell number, get a calling card and use that. They don't trace pre-paid calling cards. Again, NO THREATS! Just let them know where you stand.

AND, before you call one of these peoples homes, make sure we don't have any laws making you a felon by calling your legislators home. Anyone or any police offiers out ther know of a law that will put you in jail for just calling the home of a legislator and letting them know you don't agree with their position? They are elected by us, and it would seem to me that when they take their oath of office, they set themselves up for people calling them and wanting to let them know there positions. And I can't say it enough, be polite, tactful and even tempered. Just let them know you are watching what they are doing and do not agree with it at all. A polite, tactful call at their home may just jolt them back into reality. I know Al Gore use to get calls at his house. So why can't we do it?

Honorable Senator/Representative XXXXXXX,

I am writing this letter to direct your attention to the current effort by Senator Gilda Jacobs to renew and reauthorize at the state level the failed Clinton era experiment known as the "Assault Weapons" ban. I want to urge you in the strongest terms possible to oppose and defeat any and all efforts to see that the ban lives past its current expiration date.

The usual anti-gun politicians are calling for a needless continuation of the current ban on cosmetic rifle features such as pistol grips, bayonets and grenade launchers (are "drive-by bayonetings" or "rifle-launched grenade killings" really significant crime problems?). Not content with these restrictions, they are also calling for a ban on all self-loading shotguns (a favorite of hunters), all detachable-magazine self-loading rifles (used by most marksmanship competitors), and they seek to require gun manufacturers to submit complete lists of their dealers (a logical first step towards the registration of individual gun owners).

As there has been no statistically significant evidence presented that this ban has had an effect on reducing crime, and as it represents a serious infringement of our Second Amendment freedoms, I urge you to oppose any effort to renew the ban at the state level, as well as any efforts to institute an even more restrictive ban.  Additionally, I urge you to oppose any other measures that effectively deny citizens the right to choose which ever means they deem to be appropriate in protecting themselves and their loved ones.

As a lifelong resident and voter in Michigan, your support on a matter like this is important to me.  I look forward to your response.

Even if your senator is a democrat, remember that many of them in MI are fencesitters.  A call and a follow up email could be what keeps them on our side when the time comes (and it's important to squash this stuff NOW).

Consider writing the Senate and House Majority and Minority leaders, as well as the governor.

Heard this this morning and man did it set the tone for the rest of a shitty day!  I will be writing emails tonight and calling tomorrow.  If this goes through I will either go C&R Class III or move!!!

One of the guys I work with told me that he heard something about it last night going home. He didn't get any spacifics and the story wasn't repeated.  Really made a bad day at work even worse thinking that there was the posability that after living through 10 years of the KGB (Klinton gun Ban) that the state wants to screw us all over again.

I am going to sit down tommorrow and come up with a letter and send it to everyone I can get an address for as well as call them and send E-mails.

Not having assault weapons is a threat to me and especially my wife.  She is urging me to build her a 16" M4gery for home defense and blasting fun.


We need to make sure we are sending emails, writing, calling, and meeting with our Reps and Senators.  The governor signed the dove hunting bill because we wrote her.  She will (probably) sign this if it gets to her desk.

You are correct Senator Jacobs has expressed an intent to introduce legislation similar to what was passed on a federal level regarding the banning of assault weapons. Sen. Jacobs served in the house with me and I know her and her anti-gun antics for what they are.  While I respect the Senator and certainly believe she is entitled to her views, she has based her proposal on unfounded facts and misinformation.  

With the Republicans in majority in both the house and the senate, I would be amazed if her legislation ever sees the light of committee.

With the upcoming elections right around the corner, I hope pro-2nd amendment voters will pay attention to the voting record and bills introduced by candidates seeking re-election and meet and ask questions of those who are running for the first time.  It is the most important thing we can do as gun-owners who wish to protect our constitutional freedom.

However, I never take anything for granted and I'm pleased that you are bringing this to the attention of your legislators.

You know after reading this bill I wonder if they will grandfather your existing rifles? The bill also states the the weapon can only be used on liscensed firing ranges and held on your own personnel property and you are subjected to inspection by state police for compliance. No more kit builds annual registration fees, it also states that you can own the gun but not the magazine this law is rediculas! What is that woman thinking. I called my reps and will call again. This bill could in fact pass in less that two weeks. Call now and call again. One more thing this means no more pit shoots.

Considering what we have heard from the responding Senators thus far, I'm not loosing any sleep over this.  Doesn't mean I won't keep at it, but I'm not all that worried.

Once the AWB is a memory (next week), much of the hulabalu about it will disipate.  Just like the CCW shall issue - when it came close to passing, and did indeed pass - all the antis were talking about revoking it and so on.  Nothing happened.

IT HAS NOW BEEN SUBMITTED! This law is the worst gun control bill that I have ever seen!

1. It is more restrictive than the 1994 AWB, all "post-ban" configurations would be included
2. Registration of Assault Weapons that you already own would be required
3. Annual Renewal of Assault Weapons registration would be required
4. Storage requirements are introduced, and the THE STATE POLICE WOULD BE ALLOWED TO ANNUALLY INSPECT THE STORAGE OF YOUR ASSAULT WEAPON!
5. Penalty for violation is 4 years in prison and a $2,100 fine!

I spoke with someone from Senator Olshove's office this afternoon, regarding SB1381. He said that:

"Senator Olshove is very aware of this bill, and we have recieved alot of correspondence regarding this bill."

I don't know if that is good or bad. The other side could be kicking out their opinion as well!

He also said (paraphrasing):

"Senator Olshove has not yet taken a position on this bill. It is still a virgin bill, and it is currently in the Judiciary committe. He realizes that there is some language in this bill that have negative implications for hunters. The senator is waiting to see if this bill even makes it out of commitee, and what the final language is before taking a position on this bill."

It sounds like Olshove isn't thrilled about all of the terms of this bill, and he might be hoping that is never makes it out of commite. Then again, he may be all for some type of AWB, he just doesn't want to piss off the hunters.

I told whoever it was that I was speaking with that "I would like Senator Olshove to oppose any bills that limit the rights of law abiding Michiganders to keep and bear arms". We'll see what happens I guess.

Because of the recent expiration of the federal "Assault Weapons
Ban," Senator Jacobs has introduced Senate Bill 1381.  The intent of
this bill is to ban all assault weapons in the state of Michigan, which
the bill defines as any semi-automatic pistol or rifle that is able to
accept a magazine with more than 10 rounds and has certain cosmetic
appearances, such as a pistol grip or shoulder stock.  

Senate Bill 1381 was recently referred to the Senate Judiciary
Committee, of which Senator Alan Cropsey is chairman.  In response to
your letter, I have spoken with Senator Cropsey.  Although he has
informed me that it is unlikely the committee will be reviewing this
bill, please know that if I do have the opportunity to vote on the
proposal, I am not inclined to support it.

Thank you for contacting my office regarding Senate Bill 1381, which as
introduced would prohibit in Michigan under certain circumstances the
"manufacture, transfer, or possession of assault weapons, assault weapon
conversion kits, and detachable magazines."

SB 1381 is modeled after federal legislation, the Violent Crime Control
and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, commonly referred to as the Federal
Assault Weapons Ban.  The Act, which expired Monday, prohibited the
"manufacture, sale and importation of certain military-style,
semi-automatic assault weapons and ammunition magazines that hold more
than ten rounds."  Proponents have argued in favor of renewing the Act
due to its effect in reducing gun violence stemming from reductions in
the number of assault weapons on the street.  Opponents of the ban have
argued that the legislation has had no effect on gun violence as it
merely affected cosmetic features of semi-automatic firearms.
Additionally, opponents have noted that fully automatic weapons are
already illegal under federal law and have been for many years.

I declined an opportunity to co-sponsor this legislation, as I am
concerned that it could possibly be misconstrued to affect or possibly
ban numerous legal firearms currently used by sportsmen in the U.P.  I
am proud of my record in support of second amendment issues, and will
take your comments into serious consideration should this legislation
come before the full Senate for debate this fall, which is highly
unlikely.

Dear Evan: Thank you for writing to share your thoughts about Senator Gilda Jacobs' proposal to implement a state "Assault Weapons Ban."   Because of the recent expiration of the federal "Assault Weapons Ban," Senator Jacobs has introduced Senate Bill 1381.  The intent of this bill is to ban all assault weapons in the state of Michigan, which the bill defines as any semi-automatic pistol or rifle that is able to accept a magazine with more than 10 rounds and has certain cosmetic appearances, such as a pistol grip or shoulder stock.   Senate Bill 1381 was recently referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee, of which Senator Alan Cropsey is chairman.  In response to your letter, I have spoken with Senator Cropsey.  Although he has informed me that it is unlikely the committee will be reviewing this bill, please know that if I do have the opportunity to vote on the proposal, I am not inclined to support it.   Again, thank you for writing.  If I can be of further assistance in this or any other matter, please contact my office at any time. Dear Evan: Thank you for contacting my office with regard to state legislation to ban "assault weapons". Senator Gilda Jacobs has just introduced Senate Bills 1381 and 1382 to enact a ban on weapons covered under the federal ban that has just expired.  Please know that I do not support this legislation and will vote against it, should it come to the House for consideration.
