What's he likely to be charged with?

Felony?

I'm sure it was loaded. Maybe not one in the pipe, but a full mag.

Several years ago, I was told that it was a misdemeanor if it was just a case of being caught carrying without a permit.  I think sometime in the last few years it was upgraded to a more serious offense, but still not a felony.

That's based on fuzzy memory, and I'm not a lawyer, so take it for what it's worth.

39-17-1307.  Unlawful carrying or possession of a weapon.



 (a)  (1) A
person commits an offense who carries with the intent to go armed a
firearm, a knife with a blade length exceeding four inches (4''), or a
club.



  (2)  (A) The first
violation of subdivision (a)(1) is a Class C misdemeanor, and, in
addition to possible imprisonment as provided by law, may be punished by
a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500).



     (B) A second or subsequent violation of subdivision (a)(1) is a Class B misdemeanor.



     (C) A
violation of subdivision (a)(1) is a Class A misdemeanor if the
person's carrying of a handgun occurred at a place open to the public
where one (1) or more persons were present.
 

Unless he's a convicted felon and they want to break it off in him.
