I remember when Idaho folks thought the same thing. Prices are skyrocketing and they’ll have all the Californians they can stand soon.
Enjoy the move. I just choose the right place to live here and enjoy the hell out of it.

I'm retiring in a couple of months. We're in unincorporated Washington county bordering King City and Tigard. We paid off the house a bit over 4 years ago. Over the last few years we replaced the windows/roof/hvac and painted the exterior, but we're still thinking about leaving soon. The only hold up is we need to take my mom and find some place without extreme weather.

There's a lot more to it than just gun laws or being a blue state. Every day I see people in Oregon struggling, trying to pay rent or make the mortgage. What they don't know is that you can go to many other random states, one I've looked at is Kansas for example, and buy a 10 acre gentleman's ranch for $150,000. Still buy houses in town for under $50,000. Rent for $350 to $500 a month. Say you work at Walmart, pay is the same nationwide. Just transfere. I don't know why some people are still here? Some because of family, some just don't know better. I think Oregon is going to be getting a lot worse. At this point I'm meeting liberals who are moving to Oregon because they say it's more liberal than California. I've even had them tell me they're moving from California because of "the Nazis". Then there's our drug laws. I've been told from a reliable source that bums are making their way here just because it's basically legal to shoot up hard drugs in public here. Besides that every day conservatives are leaving. Just in the last couple weeks 2 of my friends have moved, 1 to Arkansas and the other to Florida. Said they can't handle the bullshit in this state. Why am I still here? I have a lot of, shall we say, "baggage" to figure out what to do with. I'm looking at several other states and probably will move at some point. If I was the type of person who was just a renter or lived in an RV or could fit everything I own in a U-Haul I would have been gone 15 years ago. |

Anybody notice how we don't get all those posts in the Oregon HTF with titles like "I'm moving to Oregon" anymore? I remember going back 10, 15 years maybe even more recent we would have about one thread a day where people said something like "we're loading up a U-Haul and coming up there next week". Haven't seen one of those in a while.

2. Weather sucks 3. Not cheap any more 4. November there will be a magazine ban and illegal to own outside the home. Yeah, way past time to leave. Have you heard about the new fire map? It puts western Oregon in extreme threat level which supposedly is going to cause home owners insurance to double and triple. That'll pretty much be it for me. I own a rental home. Oregon has rent control so I can only raise the rent a small amount annually. If my insurance doubles or triples and I can't raise the rent to pay for it I'll really have no choice but to sell and leave the state.

We're thinking about leaving too, but no place is going to be perfect. I can agree with you on most of your points, but our weather doesn't suck compared to 90% of the country. I would rather deal with our Winter and Summer. Having lived in the Mid West, NE, and Miami, we have it good. Our low humidity/above zero Winter temps/lack of REAL snow accumulation/etc ain't that bad. Compared to San Diego our weather does suck.  It's our politics and taxes that suck. |
