Hey, I wander in here every so often...!

The COSSA range might work, but I've only been to the public part.

There are a few clean gravel pits out in the desert that I like going to...
if anyone wants to come out for a little recce, gimme a buzz!

I haven't done true desert camping in 20+ years.   That would be pretty fun.   +1 for the desert.

COSSA is pretty much booked year around especially on weekends.  Also, tannerite (sp) would probably be a no-no.

However, there is a piece of BLM land southwest of COSSA that is easy to get to yet still remote.  It has a hill side to shot into and ranges up to 300 yards.  It also has a fairly flat area for camping.

I'll get with GhostRing and scout it again.

I know of a nice spot in Chehalis, WA.  It's not very central to the state, but people have driven all the way from Idaho and Southern Oregon.

I know about 8K acres of open land that's available.  A bit east of your circled area.

*ETA* Cape, how about Boyce Corral?

If we are planning on an overnighter, how about a coyote/rabbit hunt? Maybe out Patty's way; this Spring.

Over Central OR way, there is a nice big, gravel pit located at Pistol Butte.  It is located
a couple miles north of South Century Drive.  The South Centruy drive turnoff is 13
miles west of Hwy 97.  It's a nice secluded location and has accomodated my tannerite entertainment quite nicely.

For the fly fisherman in the HTF, the pit is a couple miles from Fall River.

No one asked, but my vote goes to Patty's place.  It may be a little further, however, private property has overwhelming advantages compared to public property in doing what Arfcomers do.

So, that's only a few miles north or so of Lapine?

As the crow flies, the pit is probably 7-10 miles from LaPine but there is no
direct routes unless you know the fire break roads.  If you look at a map,
the turnoff(unmarked road) is approximately 13 miles west of Hwy 97 on South
Century drive.

The areas south and east of the ones already posted along Hwy 20 wouldn't be that bad.

But, if it were me, I'd drive the other hour and half to Warner Valley and really put the hurt to them

If I can find the time (and cash) I would be up for that.

Stookey Flats:

Looking north from a 100 yard circle cattle watering area/camp area.

Looking south from inside the camping area.  A road is just on the other side of the truck.  The hillside seen is my idea of a beaten zone.

Looking east, THE hillside.  The hill is about 200 yards from where the pic was taken.  Close to the hill the sage is 2-3 feet high.  There is a road both north and south of the hill.

Access is from 2 dirt roads, one east and one north, both from Hwy 20.  The east is longest (about 8 miles) and easiest.  The north route is about 5 miles but very rocky, no low riding cars need apply.

Looking west:  The Sisters, Broken Top and Mt. Bach'r.

That place looks great! Let's pick a date and I'm there for sure.

As for the 4x4 friendliness, I am willing to shuttle people back and forth or possibly bring a flat bed trailer if needed. I'm sure we can work something out for the small car people.

I have land in the Fossil area.  Not sure if that helps or not.  My ranch is a 3 hour drive from PDX.  Boyce Corral is inbetween Madras and Prineville.  Its closer to Madras.

As Bend stated, private property would be the best...
and Madras is right down the street!

I would be more than happy to help out with whatever needs helpin' out...

And for any of you lowridin' car types, swing by my shop for some
skidplating and underbody armor...I'll make Rally drivers out of you yet!
