Excellent.
Let us know when we can get a range report. I'm curious how that external extractor will work out for you. I have heard a lot of bad about them, but can't imagine EVERY one causes problems. I'm in the process right now of trying to pick up an Eclipse with an external extractor myself. |
Ahhh. Kimber Tactical Custom II. Love mine.
ETA: And it runs like a top. Can't remember having any malfunctions. Just make sure you keep a hand on that recoil spring cap. They tend to fly during takedown. Another edit: What do you mean plastic? As far as I can tell, the only plastic on mine is that little thing on the mag floorplate, and that really doesn't count. |
I like the first one better, goes through metal detectors just like glocks.
Yeah, the plastic comment was a glock joke for WS4LIF, didn't figure on anyone else getting it, but as far as I can tell, mag bumper is the only plastic so far. Oh and yes, that damn guide rod bushing does fly pretty far when you are dissasembling the darn thing. |
Figures, my son likes that one better too. Seems as though it's pretty funny when those little red suction cup darts stick to the computer, tv, fridge and my face |
What I thought I school you all on this. So why didn't you get the SIG P220?
ilike9s >< Peta, CH and the rest of the glock flock. |
HA! I foldled one for quite some time today, but the grip, just didn't sit well with me, dunno, just seemed to tall or something of that nature, too long maybe? dunno, damn fine gun though, just thought I'd drink some of the 1911 koolaid for a while. Now, anyone want to buy a Beretta 96 Vertec???? |
For me anyway.... the Sig is quite comfortable with the soft rubber finger grooved Hogue grips. Congrats on the Kimber, nothing like entering the 1911 arena in style.....I pretty content with a Colt and Springfield |
Oh, I got the joke. I figured you went and bought a Glock since you liked the G19 so much. WS is right, Glocks are da shizznit fo' shizzle! Edit to add smilie. |
Very nice gun.
As far as the external extractor, dont let it bother ya. That is the one area on a 1911 that could have used a bit of improvment. It has been a soar spot for us purests but mostly because its change. Welcome to 1911s; The 350 of the handgun world! Oh your a ford guy. I ment the 351 of the handgun world. CH |
Good to see dad teaching good firearm handling skills.....better not get the Glock then, might think it's a toy and then dad's missing a tv, fridge and head! |
Just wait, one of these days, there will be a lil hotpink or WS4LIF runnin round your home, creating havok and telling you to put your hands up or I'll shoot and blammo, plastic sticky dart to the forehead. I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who has had that happen |
I've got a P220, trust me he's better off with the Kimber |
Classic! ! |
Mmmmmmmm, Kimber.......I missed out on a clackamas made one a buddy had for sale a year and a half ago. Two days after I bought my AK, he tells me I could have it for $350.......shoulda took the AK back...
On the brighter side, I worked on a Glock tonight! Got my Pa in law some new sights and a SS guide rod for X-mas....put those on this evening. Nice Kimber BTW.....can I ask how much? |
It fits me, the controls are simple, it almost points itself, so I'm confident with it already.
Fight the enemy, not your equipment, right? I know its a Kimber and not some super high end Ed Brown or like 1911, but for what I want it to do, I'm sure it will do well. |
I don't think I got hurt, NIB for a few bucks below $800 It don't really matter now, does it? I like it, hopefully I will shoot it well, so it will be worth it. Now, time to hoard more ammo |
I am happy for you - I'm getting my first 1911 (Kimber Eclipse) in March and can't wait!!!
I've only owned 9mm, 40S&W and .357 to date. Looking forward to stepping up to the big bore. |
Ans so it spreads.... MWHAHAHAHAH! |
Dang, just noticed.... external extractor....
(still beats the 220 tho!) |
Like I said, the extractor thing is a bother only to us 1911 snobs! |
So, this is gonna be a problem huh? Any way to fix this problem that I have not even realized is there? |
Hahahah NOW HOW DO YOU FEEL!!.. Muhahahaha it's the nit picking like what i got with my AR.. hahah FACE!
There is a suggestion in the Kimber forum F.A.Q. about wolf spring and new extractor part. I myself won't be bothering unless I do run into a problem when I get mine. It will be a range gun anyway. I have a Pro Carry for defensive purposes. |
Solid advice. The external extractor runs fine and if there is trouble easy to fix with the suggestion above. There are two schools of thought on extraction on a 1911. Internal, the original. Solid system that has proven itself over the years. The only real drawback is the only way to adjust tension is the tweak/bend the extractor. Now tell me how you control that with any measurable accuracy? It can be trying. Not impossible, just not ....measurable..?... Extternal. Well it kinda speaks for itself really. Easy to get to, easy to adjust with different load springs and cheaper to make IIRC. Downside, is like any other upgrade its had growing pains. But to say that the external extractor is a weak system is to say the alot of other handguns that run fine with them are weak as well. One more thing that ads to the purists dislike of the external extractor is that S&W and SIG, were one of the first if not first to introduce this system. Both companies that many 1911 people said should have stayed out of the 1911 business. S&W has alot of bad blood out there still so that surely didnt help. Peta, I wouldnt worry about it at all. Run it first and then if you run into trouble we will dial it in. CH |

Jafo and CH, thanks for the advice guys, I will definitley shoot the hell out of it and if it becomes an issue, I know who to look up now
Gunkata, it comes with the territory though, but in my defense, my Kimber has more metal in it than your AR does........ |

No kidding. As much as I love Glocks (and I do), there is definitely something to be said for having a solid piece of steel in your hands. (Never mind that the Tactical Custom has an aluminum frame) I like the aluminum frame anyways. I think the gun balances better. But that's just me. (probably something to do with my Glock fetish) If I want to shoot a heavy, all steel beast, I've got the Desert Eagle. If Kimber ever make another Tac Custom with a rail, I'll be all over it. |
Purdy! |
Hell yaeh it is. I was gonna buy a warrior just becuase of the rail, but ya know, I heard a wise ol poster on this forum (CH) once say, learn to shoot with your light in your hand, the right way. So, that's how I'm gonna approach this one. G2 and practice one of the techniques you so often hear of. |
And you believed him! Amazing! |
WHY NOT?????? Besides, makes the holster alot more simple and less expensive! |

I have the same Kimber. It rests just fine in the safe next to the Glocks with no problems. I used it for a full day of training at Oregon Firearms Academy and it ran great. In all I shot 400-500 rounds and I had two FTE and could not pinpoint the cause as we are trained to clear and get back into the fight ASAP. It may have been due to 200gr rounds and I threw those in just for training. It ate 230 Speer GD with no issues. I carried it in a Milt Sparks VM II for about 6 months and loved it.
I reverted back to a Glock 23 simply for capacity reasons. The Kimber will remain in the safe and passed down to son/daughter in time. |
Oh, important tip: Keep that barrel well oiled, otherwise you WILL start to see rust appear.
Nice lookin' 1911. I love the things, but they don't like me. No matter what I do, the thumb safety tears a hole in the web of my thumb. I have had a number of them, All the same, even with plenty of good smithin'. Oh well, I can look and admire.
BTW, where did you pick it up at? Larry's, RGS, or Flyin' Clouds? I just picked up a Taurus 605 at Larry's and a Sig Mosquito at Flyin' Clouds. Santa was good to me this year. |
I never understood that school of thought. I mean were does it end? Sure you can carry 3 mags and have uber firepower. Why not a G26 with G18 mags? Hell why not a m11 or tec nine? Reality is you should be shooting to escape not shooting for an extended exchange of gunfire. I read somwhere that the average number of shots fired by sombody defending themselves was 2. I could go one but wont... Again I just dont see the need in a CCW. |
I think any gun needs 10 rounds minimum. 7 is just too low....better hope there's only one guy....
From an arti on point shooting....
Remember these are also LEO shootings in which case they are intentionally going into bad juju areas.
I agree that 10 is a good number. That is why my carry gun has 8 rounder in it backed up by 2 tens! |
CH seems to have a grasp on the extractor issue. I frankly do not trust external extractor 1911s. A problem with an internal extractor is easily cured with a Wilson Bulletproof extractor. They are pre tensioned and usually run perfectly out of the package. If you have an issue someone with experience on 1911s can easily show you how to tension your extractor. With the externals you're stuck with what ya got.
2 FTEs is unacceptable during a course. Definitely track down the problem. Capacity: If I cant solve the problem with 9 rounds of .45acp 230gr JHPs (+2 spare 8 round mags)then I should have brought a rifle. |

In my case that's usually to the trunk of the car |

You bastard! You bought my mosquito!!!!!!! I was hoping that it would stick around for a few more days Oh well, that's one I can order as well. Nice pistol that sig is, hope you like it! Oh, BTW, that's where I got my kimber. Thats 6 guns from them this year and 3 in the last week! As for my extractor issue which has not surfaced yet, when it comes (if it does) I will address it then. A big thanks to all of you who have brought to surface any of the issues I can expect to see. Nice to know so far, there MAY only be one, other than a lack of a servant to keep my mags loaded up. Speakin of mags, damn, those things seem to multiply don't they? I started with 3, now I'm already up to 6???? |
You should go to the range with it just like that. Tag and all! |
Mini Pearl pistol... LOL |
