Excellent.

Let us know when we can get a range report. I'm curious how that external extractor will work out for you. I have heard a lot of bad about them, but can't imagine EVERY one causes problems. I'm in the process right now of trying to pick up an Eclipse with an external extractor myself.

Ahhh.  Kimber Tactical Custom II.  Love mine.

ETA:  And it runs like a top.  Can't remember having any malfunctions.  Just make sure you keep a hand on that recoil spring cap.  They tend to fly during takedown.

Another edit:  What do you mean plastic?  As far as I can tell, the only plastic on mine is that little thing on the mag floorplate, and that really doesn't count.

HA!  I foldled one for quite some time today, but the grip, just didn't sit well with me, dunno, just seemed to tall or something of that nature, too long maybe?  dunno, damn fine gun though, just thought I'd drink some of the 1911 koolaid for a while.

Now, anyone want to buy a Beretta 96 Vertec????

For me anyway.... the Sig is quite comfortable with the soft rubber finger grooved Hogue grips.

Congrats on the Kimber, nothing like entering the 1911 arena in style.....I pretty content with a Colt and Springfield

Yeah, the plastic comment was a glock joke for WS4LIF, didn't figure on anyone else getting it, but as far as I can tell, mag bumper is the only plastic so far.

Oh and yes, that damn guide rod bushing does fly pretty far when you are dissasembling the darn thing.

Oh, I got the joke.  I figured you went and bought a Glock since you liked the G19 so much.

WS is right, Glocks are da shizznit fo' shizzle!

Edit to add smilie.

Very nice gun.
As far as the external extractor, dont let it bother ya. That is the one area on a 1911 that could have used a bit of improvment. It has been a soar spot for us purests but mostly because its change.

Welcome to 1911s; The 350 of the handgun world! Oh your a ford guy. I ment the 351 of the handgun world.

Any way to fix this problem that I have not even realized is there?

There is a suggestion in the Kimber forum F.A.Q. about wolf spring and new extractor part. I myself won't be bothering unless I do run into a problem when I get mine. It will be a range gun anyway. I have a Pro Carry for defensive purposes.

Solid advice.

The external extractor runs fine and if there is trouble easy to fix with the suggestion above.
There are two schools of thought on extraction on a 1911.
Internal, the original. Solid system that has proven itself over the years. The only real drawback is the only way to adjust tension is the tweak/bend the extractor. Now tell me how you control that with any measurable accuracy? It can be trying. Not impossible, just not ....measurable..?...
Extternal. Well it kinda speaks for itself really. Easy to get to, easy to adjust with different load springs and cheaper to make IIRC. Downside, is like any other upgrade its had growing pains. But to say that the external extractor is a weak system is to say the alot of other handguns that run fine with them are weak as well.

One more thing that ads to the purists dislike of the external extractor is that S&W and SIG, were one of the first if not first to introduce this system. Both companies that many 1911 people said should have stayed out of the 1911 business. S&W has alot of bad blood out there still so that surely didnt help.

Peta, I wouldnt worry about it at all. Run it first and then if you run into trouble we will dial it in.

No kidding.  As much as I love Glocks (and I do), there is definitely something to be said for having a solid piece of steel in your hands.

(Never mind that the Tactical Custom has an aluminum frame)

I like the aluminum frame anyways.  I think the gun balances better.  But that's just me.  (probably something to do with my Glock fetish)  If I want to shoot a heavy, all steel beast, I've got the Desert Eagle.  If Kimber ever make another Tac Custom with a rail, I'll be all over it.

Actually, take a closer look at the main spring housing (the hammer spring housing on the backstrap of the pistol).  The two Kimbers I own came with plastic spring housings.

I have a TLE/RL II with an external extractor.  0 problems.  It's one of the most reliable guns I've owned.

I have the same Kimber. It rests just fine in the safe next to the Glocks with no problems. I used it for a full day of training at Oregon Firearms Academy and it ran great. In all I shot 400-500 rounds and I had two FTE and could not pinpoint the cause as we are trained to clear and get back into the fight ASAP. It may have been due to 200gr rounds and I threw those in just for training. It ate 230 Speer GD with no issues. I carried it in a Milt Sparks VM II for about 6 months and loved it.

I reverted back to a Glock 23 simply for capacity reasons. The Kimber will remain in the safe and passed down to son/daughter in time.

Nice lookin' 1911. I love the things, but they don't like me. No matter what I do, the thumb safety tears a hole in the web of my thumb. I have had a number of them, All the same, even with plenty of good smithin'. Oh well, I can look and admire.
BTW, where did you pick it up at? Larry's, RGS, or Flyin' Clouds? I just picked up a Taurus 605 at Larry's and a Sig Mosquito at Flyin' Clouds. Santa was good to me this year.

I never understood that school of thought. I mean were does it end? Sure you can carry 3 mags and have uber firepower. Why not a G26 with G18 mags? Hell why not a m11 or tec nine?

Reality is you should be shooting to escape not shooting for an extended exchange of gunfire. I read somwhere that the average number of shots fired by sombody defending themselves was 2. I could go one but wont...

Again I just dont see the need in a CCW.

From an arti on point shooting....

Remember these are also LEO shootings in which case they are intentionally going into bad juju areas.

I don't know where the requirement for high capacity mags came from. Not from serious gun studies as far as I know.

One of the findings of the study of 6000 police combat cases by the NYPD that the average number of shots fired by individual officers in an armed confrontation was between two and three rounds. And that the two to three rounds fired per incident remained constant over the ten years covered by the initial SOP 9 report. It also substantiated an earlier study by the L.A.P.D. (1967) which found that 2.6 rounds per encounter were discharged.

I agree that 10 is a good number. That is why my carry gun has 8 rounder in it backed up by 2 tens!

CH seems to have a grasp on the extractor issue.   I frankly do not trust external extractor 1911s.  A problem with an internal extractor is easily cured with a Wilson Bulletproof extractor.   They are pre tensioned and usually run perfectly out of the package.   If you have an issue someone with experience on 1911s can easily show you how to tension your extractor.   With the externals you're stuck with what ya got.

2 FTEs is unacceptable during a course.   Definitely track down the problem.

Capacity:   If I cant solve the problem with 9 rounds of .45acp 230gr JHPs (+2 spare 8 round mags)then I should have brought a rifle.
