I live 9 miles from the oliver farm, there's several households around me that are retirees that moved from Florida. I paid 80k for my house and 5 acres, it's worth 150k now because of Floridans buying up stuff around here. My neighbors house had to be sold because of a divorce and it sold for a half million, but it's an extremely nice house. The area is nice but it's 30mins to a Walmart, 45mins to decent sized towns such as tifton or perry. If you want quiet, it's quiet except for whenever you want to shoot. You can live on the lake in cordele but its gonna cost you, the lake isn't that big, and it gets pretty packed in the summer. Cordele is also a decent sized town but fairly small and quiet.

A month after moving into our new house the state not only turns blue but elects one of the most radical full of sh!t, dishonest, freedom hating, military hating, America hating socialist scumbags in a suit I've ever seen in my life. It makes me want to puke but Georgia is lost and life here will start getting worse as these types start multiplying in the state government. Just as Virginia fell, so has Georgia and with that comes the freedom destroying laws these P.O.S.'s love to pass. It is beautiful here, the people I've met are great and politics aside it's a great place to live but I see what's coming and it makes me sick so consider everything before deciding. That said the only thing that could possibly save this state is for as many Republican voters as possible to move here so there's that. |

I grew up in West Middle GA (Columbus, Ft Benning, Cusseta). I've lived in S. GA (Lee County, near Albany) for the past 45 years.
The good: Good people. Slower pace. Relatively inexpensive land and homes. The bad: Bad people. Crime is bad. Economy down here is bad. Real estate not holding its value. Everything that is bad is getting worse - not better. The real bad: You said you liked the heat, but we have extraordinary humidity with our heat. You need to visit S. GA during the summer to appreciate it. You cannot be outside for 5 minutes without breaking into a sweat. Not good for fat folks or old folks. It is truly stiffling. But at least there there are gnats and mosquitos to comfort you during these intolerable periods. We are retiring to North GA (Ellijay) when I retire in about 5 years, 354 days, 2 hours, and 51 more minutes. Already have a place. Small town country stuff without the gnats and humidity.

No-see-ums are different and worse. They are southern and eastern. The gnat line sits a little below Perry now FYI and stretches level across the state.
You get used to them. Really.

I understand the desire to move. I couldn’t ever live in the Queen City. There are lots of nice quiet areas up 77 north of Statesville though, with some beautiful views.

Really not that bad, and there's a lot of good. The humidity is the worst of it in the hottest summer months. You learn to stay inside as much as possible. Public entities who interview candidates (city managers, police chiefs, etc.) from outside the area, have learned not to have them down for an interview during the summer. If they come during the worst part of the year, they have been known to withdraw their applications.
Otherwise, it is actually great if you like the outdoors.

Wish I'd had riding mower to cut our 1 acre lot outside Cusseta. Never imagined that I'd still be cutting grass at the age of 65. Still hate it. But at least I have a tractor and bushhog to do it. I've lived in Lee County since 1984 - so yes. It is a little warm.

I paid someone to do it until my son was 9 and he wanted to do it ourselves. I got him an ego backpack and dewalt trimmer so I handle the mow and he does the rest with the cordless stuff. I remember when I first started mowing the grass my dad removed the upper folding handle on the push mower. He would have to crank it then I would mow. Same goes with car maintenance. My son expressed interest so we did our first service last weekend. I choose to hire people to do certain things not because I can’t but because my time is better spent elsewhere. I want him to be able to make those same choices as he gets older. |

I tried Skin So Soft once while fishing in Florida. The mosquitoes liked it so much they stopped biting everyone else and swarmed me
 . So it worked great as a mosquito repellent for everyone around me I guess.Last dang time I used that crap. |
