Got out all my parts and cleaned up the receiver pieces.

Decided I did not want to hack up the sexy text on the receiver, got to looking at it and modded the blocking bar to be behind the text areas and then only welded on either side.

Here she is all welded up except for some cleanup welds.

Are making a semi or are you a MFG making a post sample?  Just wondering.. I have a semi Bren built by Len Savage... I like the gun alot and it sure does turn alot of heads at the range.. just gets expensive to feed....Let me know if you find some decent prices on 303....
Here is my Bren

Get Len to build you a caliber conversion. My brother bought 1 and got 7.62x54 and I think .308 . I would give Len a call he is local to me.

I can see the cost of 7.62 x 54 going through the roof

I probably won't be making any caliber conversions for this rifle.

I have done a fair amount of that already and have some cheap shooters and ammo for them.

This will live on a shelf in the man room alongside the 1919 which will be the next project.

Looking at the wood on that pic is inspiring me to do a new buttstock for the old girl.  Anyone know of a good source for some cured walnut in appropriate sizes?

I learnt a new method of doing through drilled stocks on the lathe and want to give it a try.

Let me know if you need any mags... I have about 20 of them that need all of the cosmoline cleaned off.. I will give you a couple, just because I know I will never have the time to get all of that crap off...

Free mags?

Well ok!

Edited to say...I have 10 magazines, so I don't think I need any more.

Also, I ordered US made stock and PG since the wood in my kit is beat up.

Nice!

How much will you have in it?

$139 kit.
$250 semi parts conversion (I did not have my lathe and mill when I started this project)
I'll resell the jig for a profit I am sure, so not counting it.
$150 US stock and PG, pricey, but pretty!

I guess that's it.

$539

Cool!

Does it need to have the US parts count?

Kinda off topic, but how difficult would it be to convert it to shoot ammo that is more widely available and cheaper?
Link Posted: 8/30/2010 8:18:15 AM EDT
[#22]

Apparently conversions to 7.62x54R are possible, I don't have any of that so meh.  I'll look at making it 8mm, but making a custom bbl would not be simple and not sure the mags will handle it.

What might be fun would be 7.62x25 blowback bolt or something that size.

It's an interordnance torch-cut kit from ages ago.  Should have bought 5 of them.

Wiki says BREN guns were issued in 7.62 NATO for a while, are any of those barrels available?

I reground some troubles spots and rewelded them...but foolishly did not put the receiver back on the jig to do so figuring they were just small 1/4" to 1/2" and very shallow.  Just spots I missed welding up flush.

I got everything cleaned up and then noticed the area near the locking nut must have warped a tin bit.  I had to remove some material from the face of the nut.  Both bbls now lock in nicely.

Headspace is far to tight, the bolt will not close on either bbl.  Which I suppose is the better of the two possibilities.  I'll make a jig to hold the 'shoulder' at the correct angle, as I suspect I will be making several adjustments to get it right.

Got headspace set to minimum and pulled the trigger today.  No Kaboom.

All the neighbors are up, so I decided not to keep bumping rounds into the bullet trap trying to check the other gas settings.

I'll try the highest gas setting next, probably Monday, and then open headspace a bit if needed for function.

Blasting and parking this thing is gonna be a pain!

i love that thing!!!!  i built a semi 1919 a few years ago and i think it really means a lot when you build it yourself.  i will be doing a Bren project one day.  i just dont have the knowledge or experience (or correct tools) yet.  in fact, i  may be interested in getting that jig from you.  i think yours really turned out nice, glad to hear its working so well.    dont forget to post more pics once blasted and parked!
