In the early hours of Friday morning (11/7), two female Georgia College students were robbed of their purses while walking on Clarke Street in front of the Old Governors Mansion by a man armed with a handgun. Neither of the students was injured.
The robber was described as a white male, approximately six feet tall with blond hair and a slim build. He was reported to be wearing a black hooded shirt and black sweat pants. He fled the scene as a passenger in a dark colored, four-door sedan which turned eastbound on West Franklin Street. The driver of the car did not leave the vehicle during the incident. Half a block from the dorms. I'm glad the NRA backed HB 89 over 915 so that I can't protect myself on or near campus 
Will new legislation be introduced in January (due to the "one gun bill per year" agreement)? |

You should see the GA Tech crime alerts that I get... This past summer there was a group of guys who were robbing GROUPS of students. There were a couple of e-mails I got and they all had the same story:
-white car drives up to group of students -multiple men get out brandishing weapons -belongings of group of students is taken -men drive off There was also an armed carjacking at the common drop off area for one of our dorms. Some poor woman was waiting in her car for a friend to come out and two guys walked up with guns and told her to get out. Damn, its a good thing they banned guns on campus. I don't know what would happen if criminals were allowed to have guns on a school campus....

I was told a couple of weeks back by a campus police officer that if he ever saw me carrying a knife not uniform (ACUs for ROTC) that he would arrest me-

On behalf of Chairman Mitch Seabaugh The Senate has been engaged in extensive budget work the past two months. With our state's budget challenge along with the amount of time being spent by Senators on the budget, it is prudent that we cancel the November 13 meeting. Since we will not meet that does not mean we will not consider input from individuals. Please submit testimony in writing to my office and I will ensure it is passed along to the committee members. We will have our last scheduled meeting as we planned. Prior to that meeting and keeping with my commitment for an open process, I will e-mail out to the mailing list a draft (yes, a draft) that will reflect the sub-committees' proposals. In that last meeting the committee will discuss, make changes and vote on legislation to be recommended to the entire Senate. May I also take this time to pass along to everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Vulcan94 I've heard from a very good source that some of them actually have AR's in there patrol cars. I know for a fact that they have Bennelli shotguns. |

6 rooms in the apt building next to mine were broken into on Halloween night. and a few weeks ago 2 females were robbed at gun point by 2 black males with uzi's (as they claimed
) at another apt complex about 200 feet away from my campus.

I'd be happy with being able to carry a firearm in my car while on a campus, or to carry it concealed if I'm walking on campus grounds. I do not ever see the general assembly making it okay to open/conceal carry to a classroom, license or no license. I'd be happy to fight for that, but I really don't see it flying in Georgia.
What pisses me off is that if I need to take night classes, I have to be completely disarmed on my way there, walking around the campus at night, and then on my way back. What if I'm carjacked? What if I'm robbed while en route to my car? What if I come home and there's a robbery in progress at my place? Each of those scenarios may be unlikely to occur, but then again so is a high-speed head-on collision on I-20 and yet people still buy cars with 5-star safety ratings. The point is, I'd like to be prepared for whatever happens, and more important, I would like to be the one responsible for my own safety. Relying on campus cops, cell phones and 911 isn't a recipe for success, as all of the above stories have more or less proved. |

Be careful, he's very astute and can rip people to shreds. for example.
I have received your e-mail and read your editorial. I was shocked at the number of mischaracterizations, misinformation, and down right incorrect and misleading statements. If you wish, please give me a call and I will go through item by item each incorrect item. When you call, please allow plenty of time. Let me at least be very clear to all you sent this to that your statement of "[a] Georgia Senate firearms "study committee" will soon propose it be legal to carry handguns, either concealed or visible, into college classrooms," is incorrect. There is no proposal. If you have one, show it to me. Our meeting on Thursday was going to allow discussion on the matter. Sir, the last time I checked America was still a place where its citizens could petition their government. They have the right to make their case and those who don't agree have the right to challenge. The Second Amendment is still a part of the Constitution. Our jobs are to have laws that provide balance, but still follow the the Constitution. I am sworn to uphold the Constitution. There are those who would rather silence opposing views. They want no one to consider comments of anyone other than their own. Mr. Wilburn, that is exactly what I wanted to avoid in our study committee. I have silenced no one or tried to intimidate anyone's testimony and especially, I haven't disrespected anyone for their point of view. I have given consideration to all who wanted to participate. I have been open and honest about my position, but was willing to allow every point of view to bring their information and to make their case. I suggest if you have something to offer, make your case. But please, do so with facts and not with misleading comments. Respectfully, mitch |

Georgia State has its only police. Some are nice guys. They do a good job of being seen on campus, but its right when you walk off campus or in some parts of campus, you get into trouble. |

GT has its own police too. Most GA campuses do now (even Kennesaw does, but I don't think they carry guns).
I was offered a professor position at Mercer, and I was so excited until I went to see the campus on the weekend. I felt like I needed body armor. No thanks. If I could pick Mercer up and move it to a better location, I'd be working there now.

I liked the head of the department a lot (very nice guy), and I only ruled it out because a safer (and closer to home) job came up. I sometimes think I made the wrong decision (like today, the way things are going at work), so I may revisit the notion of working there. I was just surprised by what I saw immediately off-campus on my way there. Looked like some parts of East Point I have seen - the "get the hell out of here fast" attitude of people walking and the general disrepair and "old" look of all the structures and landmarks. It looked run down. I may have judged it improperly. Campus seemed nice, but it was too far away from home for me and not what I was expecting. It sure would be nice if I could carry if I worked there, though.

Georgia College Public Safety officials and the Milledgeville Police Department today announced an arrest had been made in the late-night armed hold-up of two GCSU students two weeks ago. The suspect, 19 year old Robert William Renshaw, who listed his address as Magnolia Park Apartments, has been charged with armed robbery. A second suspect, 18 year old Rashawn Erek Abernathy, is still being sought and is believed to have fled the state.
According to Detective Robert Butler of GCSU Public Safety, Renshaw is also being charged with entering parked cars with the intention of stealing. Additional warrants are also expected to be filed. Detective Butler said the investigation is continuing. |
