Have a quick question regarding firearms in GA. Today, I saw some armed security guards servicing an ATM at school (a state university). All of them had revolvers on their hips, one in a blue uniform, the others in polo shirt and slacks.. My question is are they legally allowed to carry a weapon on campus? If they are not law enforcement officers or retired LEOs, what allows them to carry a firearm on campus? Is there a permit or agreement somewhere that grants access? Thanks

Legally they are considered a private security business which allows them some of the comforts of a LEO.

Check out Title 43 of the GA Code. If you're that interested. They are required to qualify and pass Background checks.

(f) An individual issued a permit in accordance with this Code section shall be exempt from the following laws of this state:
(1) Code Section 16-11-126, relating to carrying a concealed weapon;
(2) Code Section 16-11-127, relating to carrying deadly weapons at public gatherings;
(3) Code Section 16-11-128, relating to carrying a pistol without a license; and
(4) Code Section 16-11-129, relating to licenses to carry pistols and revolvers generally.

So, if I started my own Private Security service, employing only one person (myself) and passed the background checks and qualified every year or whatever they require, I too can carry on a Campus or other places normally off-limits to the regular CCW holder?

I would be providing private security to myself. Could this be a loophole that hasn't been seen yet?

They have a board that looks over the "licenses" to these security companies. Read the Title 43 section and you'll understand the process. I doubt that you would get a license for your business plan.

not to mention unless the laws have been changed you can only carry a .38 special with semi wadcutter ammunition. Thats the way it used to be at least

The board only allows the carry of certain makes/models/calibers.

I wondered why most of the ATM guys I see carry revolvers. That's a weird law. Might be time for an update to that one.

At the time it was told to me that the .38 swc was the easiest to ballistically trace. Kind of sounded like BS to me.

I think and was told that if you get a private investigator's license you can carry just about anywhere.

Again unless the law was changed the PI's could only carry 9mm. We all know .45 is way better

IANAL, however I am a Licensed Private Investigator by the state of Georgia and we can now carry up to a .45 Auto or a .357 revolver also we can carry all places except schools all the time. Security guards can carry the same calibers but they can only carry on the job and to and from work with no stops enroute.
