Hey Georgia crew, I'm driving down from Maryland to Amicalola Falls near Dawsonville, which I gather is near Atlanta. I'm supposed to attend the wedding of my girlfriend's old college roomate. <boring> So, as an indulgence, we are going to camp out in Smokey Mountain National forest the night before. I'll ask in the TN forum about places to stay there.

Do you guys know any fun activities to do near Amicolola Falls?
Any canoeing, horseback riding, biking...shooting?

Also, is Georgia an open carry state?

Georgia is NOT open carry. You can carry in your glove box, center console, and trunk.

I haven't been to the falls in years but if I rememeber correctly it is a couple hours from Atlanta.

Maybe someone else will have more info.

The cheeath huh? I take it thats a "unmentionable" type of club.

I personaly don't know who the groom or bride is.
I was just looking for outdoorsey things to do.

Does lake Lanier have jetski rentals?

Do you mean the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? If so, you could call and see if you can get a reservation to camp at Cades Cove. It's pretty cool and they stay booked up.

You probably don't want to get caught with a firearm in the park.

There are various other places to camp in that area. Townsend (if you like more of the nature scene), Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville (if you like tourist trap stuff).

I am a newbie to GA, but just came from E. TN.

You can keep a pistol loaded on the seat out in the open from what I understood of the laws in Ga. Just as long as it was holstered.

Nope, no holster.

On the seat, in the glovebox, or in the center console........loaded.

Georgia is open carry if you have a license.

Open Carry is legal in Georgia, and requires no permit. I've looked thru the books myself and can't find open carry being illegal anywhere. It may not be the smartest move if you don't like being hassled by the local PD but it's still not illegal.
If anyone says otherwise ask them to prove it, because the burden is on them.

Perhaps you need to look a little harder.

16-11-128.

(a) A person commits the offense of carrying a pistol without a
license when he has or carries on or about his person, outside of
his home, motor vehicle, or place of business, any pistol or
revolver without having on his person a valid license issued by the
judge of the probate court of the county in which he resides,
provided that no permit shall be required for persons with a valid
hunting or fishing license on their person or for persons not
required by law to have hunting licenses who are engaged in legal
hunting, fishing, or sport shooting when the persons have the
permission of the owner of the land on which the activities are
being conducted; provided, further, that the pistol or revolver,
whenever loaded, shall be carried only in an open and fully exposed
manner.
(b) Upon conviction of the offense of carrying a pistol without a
license, a person shall be punished as follows:

(1) For the first offense, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanor;
and

(2) For the second offense, and for any subsequent offense, he is
guilty of a felony, and, upon conviction thereof, shall be
imprisoned for not less than one year nor more than five years.

(c) On and after October 1, 1996, a person licensed to carry a
handgun in any state whose laws recognize and give effect within
such state to a license issued pursuant to this part shall be
authorized to carry a handgun in this state, but only while the
licensee is not a resident of this state; provided, however, that
such licenseholder shall carry the handgun in compliance with the
laws of this state.

If this is the section you are thinking about and think the part in blue allows it, see the part in red. That is the catch.

I think an unlicensed legal resident citizen could get away with open carry here. As long as you had a lawyer in tow.

No ATL GA lawyers I've talked to will stake their careers on the issue. (Four of them anyhow).

The law is very vague about public open carry.

Well, as I read it I an carry in the gove box and thats fine with me. I just learned that firearms are prohibited in national parks. Bummer.

Yes at Lake Lanier Island and at Holiday Marina.
Amicola Falls is a State Park with camping and Cabins.
