I'd like to start a thread to list contact info/website links, etc. for gunsmiths in Georgia. Here's the info I'd recommend listing:

Name
Location (address, directions,  mapquest link, etc.
Type of work and specialties

I'd certainly invite and expect smiths themselves to post here, and maybe even some of the bordering states smiths as they would still be relatively convenient.

If the mods are o.k with it, can we get this tacked if it takes off?

Here's my first submission

Hogleg Smith (Neal Spruell)
Southern Machine Works
4970 Poplar Springs Road
Oakwood, GA 30566
770-503-7572
Specialties: Cowboy Action guns, stock making, general smithing, lathe and mill work.

Neal has built some outstanding single actions and lever guns. He has built guns that have won the End of Trail competition. He's been to the Gainesville Eastmans show recently. While his specialty is cowboy Action stuff, he has worked on a few guns for me and handled transfers as well. 35 years experience.

An update here to my post above about Neal Spruill aka Hogleg Smith. I took my AR10-T barrel to him today to have it cut to 22", threaded 5/8x24x0.625" for my can, and then crowned with a 11* target crown. He asked some details on what I was looking for, and I asked him how long it would take- he said I could come get it tomorrow afternoon. Kep in mind, he's not an out of business smith. He had 2-3 other projects in process while I was there and a guy I work with took him a rifle last week, so that kind of turn around is appreciated. I asked him how much, he said $65. That's a great price. I have found some others that would do it for around that price, but it would have required shipping both ways and would have ended up around $100 total. I'll post to this post tomorrow when I get home with it with a review of the work.

Doc Holt rocks. He's done several things for me that were right on the money. Plus he won't let you do anything stupid. Just don't get him going on politics and social issues unless you have at least an hour to kill.

I'm in Forsyth and I usually ship my barrel work off.  It would be nice to have someone local who could do it.

SWR can thread barrels and such. They're iin Evan, GA, outside of Augusta. Is that close to you? (Or closer than ATL?)

Joe at SWR does not thread any more.  The suppressor work takes all the time now. He uses Lee Doby @ Accuracy By Design last time I talked with him.  Lee is a good guy and does nice work. Hiss website is www. accuracy by design.com. You can get his number from the site, I cannot find the card.

That may be where Joe sent my barrel. He didn't necessarily say he had a smith in house, just that he could thread my barrel. Whether the smith was contracted to do it, I don't know.

In the Athens area:

Georgia Outdoor Sports
706-425-HUNT
http://www.georgiaoutdoorsportsathens.com/

They have a gunsmith on duty Tuesday-Saturday.  He has done a few minor things for me at reasonable rates.  I don't know what all he offers.  His rates have always been good.

The Firing Lane
706-546-6111
http://www.firinglane.com/page1.html

Once again, I don't know the full range of services the smithy there offers, but they do post that they offer gunsmith services.

Franklins
706-543-7803
http://www.franklinsofathens.com/main.html

They have a crusty old feller there.  He has done one item of minor work for me.  Not sure of what all he offers in the way of services.  The general service at Franklins is hit or miss.  GA Outdoors has put a little pressure on them; so, they have gotten better.

For M1 and M1A repair and accurization there are none better than.

Gerald J  Boutin AKA "Hook" or "Old Hook"
(770) 537-5879
968 Old Bushmill Rd
Bremen, GA 30110

Hook is quite a character.  He's 80 and is a former Army Markmanship Unit armorer and the 1987 GA high power champion.  Ask him any question and he'll tell you what he thinks.  You can mail him rifles to work on, but I'd suggest you set a time and go and do the work with him.  You'll learn a lot.

I took my 2 CMP M1s to him and he made them better by a mile.  He has a 600 yd range behind his shop on a neighbor's property to test fire after the work is done.  His specialty is the M1A.

His prices are cheap and the conversation alone is worth the price.  He is a wealth of knowledge.  All M1 owners need to visit him, so we can preserve our history.

Here's a smith that's new to me, but is pratically in my backyard...

Patriot Arms

Lots of precision rifle work, and seems well respected on Snipershide.
