 My new carbine (well, upper anyhow), courtesy of mototard. You think I could get by with some cheap red dot BSA sight from Walmart or something for now, or would that be communist? |

Save your money and buy an Aimpoint or Eotech. A cheap dot sight will drive you nuts. They won't hold a zero. 90% of the cheapos are not paralax free.

I don't think you guys understand, I jsut need something to get me by for a month or so until I can invest in a real optic. Don't worry I'll go Mossberg pump first before I go carbine with crappy optics if the zombies attack when/if the SHTF. Do you think a BSA/BEC red dot will be completely compatible with the flat top, in terms of fit, stability, front site post in the way? |

I would buy a rear flip site then save for a red good dot. Then you could co witness them.

Damn, I'm just a parrot.  Seriously though, ebgb68's idea is the best way to do it. You WILL need a back-up iron sight, right? Get a good BUIS now and wait on the other optics until you can get the best you can afford. Believe me, I know what it is like to be impatient. I also know how bad it sucks to buy the cheap stuff, only to hate it later and you end up spending more money in the long run. Maybe LostWildCat will let you blow him for $25. If you blow him once a day for two weeks you will have that Aimpoint.

You can't. Quality BUIS's run around the $90 range. Just save up and wait or use your credit card.

Like I said, I do understand the impatient thing, but do you really want to throw away even $5.00 on some piece of crap just because you're excited about shooting your new toy? Maybe one of the 'Bama guys has a BUIS or carryhandle you can borrow. Hell, just point shoot it if you can't wait a few more days.

I have a BSA for my beretta neos. It is a POS. It will not hold a zero mostly because of the shitty lopsided mount. And that's on a 22lr pistol.
It wasn't until I started playing with rifles that I realized the real money is in the optics. If you're around Cobb Co. some weekend and want to borrow it you are welcome to. Save your money for a real sight. |

If you are really dead set on getting a cheap dot for the time being, get something like a Tasco Pro Point or a Bushnell. I had the Bushnell and it's a pretty nice sight actually.

Yeah, I completely ignored all of your warnings and got a 30mm Tasco from Kmart ($30) on my lunch today. I know I'll probably regret it, but I absolutely cannot wait to fire it up tomorrow morning Bah, $30, I can upgrade for Christmas...p.s. It actually seems like a decent quality optic. What causes red dot optics to loose their zero anyhow? Jarring the rifle around? The repeated percussion from firing it? Furthermore, is the zero lost when you swap batteries? |

Well, I ignored what you all told me and bought a tasco red dot for just the time being. Bah, what's $30 for a cheap thrill Seriously, it actually worked very well and seems to be of a better quality than I expected. Here was my next to last group of shots with it. They were pretty centered up by the end (I accidentally ripped up the final target with a mag dump):

The target was a little less than a hundred yards, so I wasn't very scientific with the sighting in. Just guesstimating a few clicks left, a few right, until it was zeroed. |
