Cocked'n'Locked is the way to go on a 1911. While this may seem reckless, keep in mind that the 1911 actually has two safeties (three if you count Kimber's Series II firing pin safety). The first is the thumb safety, which not only blocks the sear from releasing, but also locks the slide in place, thus preventing any slide movement. The second safety is the grip safety, which, if not depressed, prevents the trigger from being pulled. You can pull, push, or huff and puff at the trigger all you want, but if the grip safety is not pushed in, it won't fire. Also, the Series II safety locks in the firing pin if the grip safety is not depressed, thus it won't fire. The 1911 is a very safe pistol to carry, provided you learn its mechanics and its operation, but IMHO, its no more dangerous to carry cocked and locked than any other pistol in DA mode, safety on. YMMV
