What size is the original? Same as that tiny one I first saw?

Well Bradd, you might want to slip over to your local MD, get some shots and get rid of it.

Very nice, Bradd.

Did you put the rails on that yourself?  Which rail system is it?

It's the Knight's M5 RAS.  It's the same one in use by the Marines on the M16A4.  It's not free float and pops on like the standard handguards.

Why wouldn't you get one that free-floats?  Ironically, I'm wanting to turn that upper I bought from you into a very similar rifle.  I want some type of rail system, but one that free-floats the barrel.  For optics I'm really leaning towards an ACOG TA31.

I chose the M5 for a couple of reasons:

1. I am able to decide whether I like the rail idea without modification to the weapon.

2. Simplicity.  Removes like standard handguards if the need ever arises.

3. It was considerably cheaper than the FF RAS.

I am still considering the FF RAS, but I want to make sure it's what I want before I undertake the modification.  I would like to get to the point where I can do all the work on my AR and I have to make sure the FF RAS will figure into that.

Bradd,

How long you gonna keep this one?  j/k

I got a Daniel Defense FF and I really like it.  The quality seems about the same as KAC, and the fit was impressive.  My only knock is the kinda bumpy four welds that attach the rail to the barrel nut 'block'.

Removing the AR barrel is no big deal, if you can get the sight base pins out.  Email me for more info..
