Am I the only person having trouble with connections? Please advise. I am wondering why I pay these people.

When I had Earthlink DSL it was perfect.  Unfortunatelly they cannot connect me now thanks to BellSouth.
I told BellSouth to screw themselves with their absurd charges and signed with Charter (cable modem).
Charter has been very good.  However, I noticed some issues since last week's virus attack.  My company's network was simply shut down because of that.
Maybe they are experiencing similar problems in their servers.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I've had periods in the last 10 days or so when connecting to the net and the E-mail servers was impossible for hours on end. I understand that they're a utility and deserve some occasional slack, but I'm considering alternatives after being with them for seven years.

Connection has been good for me. What bugs the shit outta me, regarding Mindspring(yeah, I know they changed names), is that damned Total Access piece of crap. I would go with AOL if I wanted to jump through hoops. I, luckily, had an older version of pop-up blocker that will run without having Total Access running. Don't even get me started about the 'new' spam blocker. I emailed them about it and it's like they didn't even read my email and told me what they wanted me to hear. I have been with them for years, but, I too, am thinking of jumping ship.

yeah, I'm having troubles.
I've been trying to get information from one of the managers here and it's been 6 days and 4 requests.
See, we have these things called the CVB's that were created by the late, great Charles Brewer founder of MindSpring that Elink supposedly adopted after the "merger"
In these Core Values and Beliefs we recognize the things we need to do to become profitable and to provide the best customer experience we can.
There are 9 original CVB's and Elink found it necessary to add to the list "We love to compete..blah blah yada yada" Back in the day these CVB's were required knowledge and everyone knew and respected them and lived by them as best they could.

THINGS HAVE CHANGED

This is no longer MindSpring obviously and never will be again, that is lost forever in this company. Work is no longer fun at all anymore, just a daily grind. With the growth of a corporation, things need to be sacrificed, too bad ours was CVB # 4....well all of them are quickly falling by the wayside one after another.

The one I particularly like is the CVB
"We are frugal. We guard and conserve our company resources with the same vigilance that we would use to guard our own personal resources"
AND THERE'S A 15 FOOT TALL SIGN THAT SAYS THAT TO PROVE IT!
I'm not saying I don't like my new 800 dollar chair but damn, the old one would have been fine, my ass groove was just right!!

Oh, you meant connection..... mine is ok.

btw, maybe I can be of some help. I'm no longer able to get to BellSouth for testing but I did start the DSL Support dept back when we were MindSpring...got sync?

Ahhh, yes... the new Spamblocker...
It now takes me four times as long to check E-mail, waiting on this piece of junk to feebly catch a small portion of the continual Spam deluge destined for me.
Generic Viagra, anyone?

Also, I'm having a continual problem with my computer downloading about (for example) 5 of 7 emails successfully. It then gives me a popup telling me about its failure.
I try again later to download emails, believing I'll make a fresh attempt at the last two... but NO!!! It picks up the first five AGAIN, and tells me it failed again.
I've been going to my Web Accessed Mail and eliminating downloaded messages there, so I don't get Email-Vu from the Earthlink server.

Customer support: I might as well move to India.
After about 20 minutes of expalining repeatedly that I'm NOT using Outlook and I've disabled my anti-virus software, and that I did re-install the entire TotalAccess software package yesterday, I'm told to Re-install the software AGAIN. This has happened twice... Thanks, Pradeesa and Vishnu.

Please excuse the normally mild-mannered veterinarian as he goes postal.

Man, you actually use the Total Ass toolbar piece-o-crap? No wonder you are gonna go postal. Just let me know which post office so I can avoid it.

I concur with Byte here, uninstall that assmonkey POS toolbar crap.

If you use it just for pop-up blocking which I did, Google's new toolbar has a popup blocker in it, I use that at work and home now.

I have Earthspring, I mean Earthlink. I have no problems with it to date. Been with them for about 1.5 years. At work I sometimes have trouble getting my email, but our network does run through a firewall. Maybe the firewall slows it down. I dunno. At home though no complaints so far.

I still have a copy of the stand alone popup blocker if any Mind/Link folks want it. It 'calls home' every month to verify account status. At least that's what it looks like it is doing.

Got this today...I may have gotten one a few day/weeks ago too...

Dear EarthLink Subscriber,

We are making changes to our DSL network to improve
the reliability of our DSL service.  These changes will
occur between 8/25/2003 and 9/05/2003.  You should not
experience any interruption in service during this
upgrade, however if you do, please follow the below
steps to restore your Internet connection.

NOTE: If you have a BroadMax modem, as indicated on
the bottom right corner of the modem, you will need
to download a patch from the Internet.  You should
do this BEFORE 8/25 to avoid connection difficulties!
Please see instructions below.

(You may want to print out this email and keep it for
your records.)

TRY RESTARTING YOUR MODEM:
If you experience any interruption in service during
or after the network upgrade, please make sure the
Broadmax modem instructions at the end of this email
don't apply to you. Then follow these steps:

1. Turn off the DSL modem (if applicable) and unplug the DSL
   modem from the power cord.

2. Unplug the DSL modem from the phone cord that connects
to the wall phone jack. Wait 30 seconds.

3. Plug in the phone cord and plug in the power cord.

4. Turn on the modem (if applicable). Wait 30 seconds. Then attempt
   to connect to the Internet.

HOW TO GET HELP FROM EARTHLINK

Your business is important to us, and we are continually
working to bring you the best possible DSL service.
We apologize for any inconvenience this network change
may cause you.

Could not connect for the last 12 hours...

Alrighty, computer guys:How would you try to run things if you were in my shoes? How can I avoid using the TotalAccess software? I am on (gasp) dial-up.
-Hobbit

By the way, you may not hear a reply from me for quite a while. It just depends on when Earthlink decides I'm worthy to be on the net again.

Just uninstall it and use some pppoe software or XP's dialer (assuming you are using XP) to dial in.

That Total Access is no more than fluff, it isn't necessary to connect or do anything for that matter. I'm pretty sure it was designed for AOL type folks that don't know better and to put everything into one bloated spot.

There's nothing in Total Access that you cant get anywhere else. What I do is just connect at boot up and just leave it on. I pop IE to surf the web and Outlook to get mail...sinchy!

Simple, just set up your dial-up networking to connect to EarthBlink. Use Outlook or some other mail client to get your email. Use IE or some other browser to get your porn. You can use any FTP software to upload your webpages. Use the stand alone popup blocker(need it?) or the googlebar for popup stopping. Simple. See how much freedom you have. Of course, to use the highest blocking setting on SpamBlocker you have to keep your online address book up-to-date, which is stupid. Spaminator worked fine for me.

Yeah, it sucks! I hate that damn menu bar at the top and although the pop up blocker is a good thing for pages like DrudgeReport.com, it sux here! Can't count the times I've I've clicked on an url link or to send an IM and set there thinking, "Damn, is this thing ever going to load?"

The Spam blocker for e-mail pisses me off to. If you're on a discussion list, like I am for 3 different chimney sweep e-mail lists, it'll block them. Apparently you can change that through a filter but I'm to dumb to figure it out. Last time I tried I ended up blocking everybody!

Regarding the popup blocker: Have you set it to allow popups for ARFCOM? That's what works for me.
Regarding your email: Have you added those addresses to you online address book? Yeah, I know...'there is an online address book?'. This applies when spam blocker is set to 'HIGH'.
