Do any of y'all remember Ralph's Barbeque in Weldon/Roanoke Rapids before they remodeled?
They used to have wooden plank floors and picnic tables inside.

It was very strange for a Yankee kid - I barely got out alive for putting ketchup on the barbeque.

Sorry OP I’ve never been to Roanoke Rapids.

I love N.C. bbq now and make special trips down just to get some, but as an 8 y.o. kid thought it too spicy.  Having spent most of my first six years of life living near Pittsburgh, I picked up the habit of pouring ketchup on everything.

Side note: I have step-family (NC natives) in Farmville and Greenville.  I assume y'all can confirm that Greenville has gone full retard.

Ketchup is for French fries and burgers.
I swear I’ve never heard of anyone putting ketchup on BBQ!

Ketchup is for heathens but I agree with you on the 'slaw. Not a fan of it on barbecue, or anywhere else for that matter.

I remember the first time I had slaw on BBQ, life-changing. Never went back.

North side of the river? I honestly don't know, I don't get over that way much.
B's BBQ is still as popular as ever.

I used to stop there all the time when I was regularly going back and forth from DC.

Haven’t been in long time, though. Probably around a decade.

Slaw, for me it depends on what type

In the small town I grew up in the slaw was shredded and had the juice from canned tomatoes, vinegar and red pepper

Depending on the joint it was hot or mild

If you got slaw on your sandwich you didn't need sauce

Damn I miss those places

You have yet to meet Jesus.  Slaw on BBQ is the best!!

That said, I owned my own BBQ restaurant for years, sold it a few years ago.  There are different types of slaw... some people prefer shredded or chopped cabbage with oil, vinegar and a dash of salt and pepper.  That isn't my thing.

I always made a vinegar and mayo based, shredded slaw which is more of the KFC type (although VASTLY superior to the mass produced, chemical laden slop at KFC) and I sold a mega crap ton of it, even to die hard vinegar and oil slaw lovers.

You don't happen to have a recipe for red cole slaw, do you?
