I’m interested in joining you guys depending on the date. I’ve got some land nav teaching experience so I’d be happy to assist in any way I can.

LEADERS RECON

I am heading down with my son today to look at two areas for the meet up. Looking at Holt's Picnic Area if the weather is decent, and the Kings Mountain Point Day Use Area if it's not.

I'll have the meet up listed this evening.

We'll be meeting at the Kings Mountain Point Day Use Area in the Uwharrie National Forest. It has a shelter if we need it, bathrooms, some trail heads if we want to hike trails instead of the gravel road, and is easy to find. I need to get a head count so we can get some supplies together for the land nav intro, so please post up if you're coming. Tentative schedule is 6 mile ruck (3 mile option for any new members) starting at 10:00am. After the ruck we will have lunch (bring your own - depending on location we may not have any cooking areas) and then continue into two blocks of training - intro to land nav, and intro into ham radio. Hopefully we will get a chance to start going over an intro to mountaineering, too. How in depth we go will depend on getting the proper members there to run the classes. I will post up a seperate thread and try and tag everyone in it. This is a perfect time to reach out to friends outside our normal circle and bring them into the fold!

We had an OUTSTANDING event today.

After a good 6 mile ruck, we proceeded to have instruction on Swiss seats, knots, and rope bridges. Following that we did an intro to land nav and how to read maps, and finished up with some great info on ham radios.

Thank you to all who made it. This was a fantastic event, and I’m really looking forward to rappelling!

That's a little colder than I'd like to be outside

It was awesome....no wind and sun so not bad at all....I actually overdressed.  Should have just brought the coat along and only worn a wool mid/top layer....I only did 3.5 because I was starting to get wet even with the coat open and side vents open.  I only had a Kraft base layer and a lightweight wool mid layer on under the coat.... ;)

there are lots of winters here where it almost never snows....we've had snow on the ground for about 2 weeks or so...it's awesome!

Nice job on the hike and training!

Patch looks great!

Mine is on the back of my pack....

I really needed to get out today to loosen back up, but have not made it. I've been trying to get 2 days of chores done in 1, all while trying to relax before work kicks off again in the morning.

UPDATE:

Be there by 9am, with the waiver already filled out. If you have not gotten one yet, let me know and we will get it to you. If we're all there on time, we should be able to get in our block of instruction and one rappel each before lunch.

Just like the last time, bring your own lunch and drinks. There are bathrooms and water available on site. There is a covered picnic area as well.

If you have a helmet, it is not required but highly recommended you bring it along, especially if you have never rappelled. We will have our own medic as well.
