I've read the game regs a few times and can't find any restrictions on minimum rifle caliber that can be used for deer hunting.  I know certain counties have their own restrictions on use of a rifle for deer hunting.  Can a 223/5.56 be used for deer hunting legally?

If it is not exluded in the game regs or your county it should be fine.  I also went through the game regs and .223 was not excluded by the state.  Like you said counties have all sorts of odd rules ie minimum caliber, how high off the ground you have to be etc.

Thanks.  I figured if you can use a .25 caliber pistol then a 223 was fine.

There are NO caliber restrictions on rifle deer hunting on a statewide basis.

Local and county laws may vary from state law though.

There are caliber restrictions on pistols for deer hunting though.
