That's the headline at the top of the front page in today's Charleston Post & Courier.
Actually reading the article reveals that the business owner heard breaking glass at his shop (he lived about 50 yards away and had a wireless intercom). He investigated, but didn't see anything except the pieces of glass, which he cleaned up, and then went back to his house.
Shortly afterward he heard more breaking glass, so he grabbed his shotgun and went back to the store. He saw a guy trying to break in and told him to stop. The thug jumped into the car and started the engine. The owner repeated commands to shut off the car, but the criminal hit the gas and tried to run him over. After being struck by the car, the owner sent a load of buckshot through the windshield.
The BG is in critical condition, taking the buck in the head. His accompanying accomplice is in jail.
Al Cannon, the Charleston County Sheriff, said the store owner did nothing wrong. The solicitor declined to press charges against the owner.
Yet, the headline implies some sort of outlaw vigilante justice.
It should have read, Store Owner Shoots Burglar In Self-Defense.
